Here's the deal... you got kiddy anime, teen anime, adult anime. As far as tastes go, I think it depends on the person. I've known some guys who like more romantic anime (more so than myself) than they do the "beat em up shoot em up kind/ action." I've never been that "girly" in tastes; I like action more than I do the sappy/ romantic/ cutesie kind. It depends on the individual at hand, as has been previously stated! ^_^

I do agree with a lot of the posts above, but I think it's possible that anime could be a little more directed towards males. I mean, there are the shoujo and shounen types, but many of them have a constant style of adding a little bit of mild "fan-service" here and there. A female character may ocassionally loose her top, get a little "felt up", and there's always those *camera* angles that a guy may appreciate more than a girl would.

Of course, I'm a little biased because I've been checking out several new animes - and they ALL contain a lot of the above. There's different anime for different people - I have yet to find a new one for me.

When it comes to fandom, however, I guess it pretty much balances out ^__^;;

Hm...I'd have to say anime has the best of both world. Fanservice for both men and women, if you will.

Like video games, it does seem that most anime is geared toward boys in their teens. But thinking about it, doesn't most 'cartoons' seem that way. However anime really isn't.

There's plenty of anime out there that is sutble for both men and women.

i read the title of this thread and the first word that came into my mind was STUPID . i mean, its inherit nature is to be sexist, narrowminded and stereotipic.

ok I think anime is suited for all ages and for both male and female. There are different types such as fantasy, scif-fi, horror, etc. And these categories appeal to both genders. It really is up to the person themselves to like it or not. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. so it really is made for both genders not one in particular.

i think that anime is for both sexs. the reason i think this is because of how many different people i see buying anime, normally i will just see girls buying them or i will see both sexs buying them.
i am a senior at my highschool and i am always willing to make new friends, i am into various types of music and i watch anime and write stories.

Personally, I believe anime doesn't have a gender direction. I think it's for everyone who likes it..

Male

I think anime in the west is definately targeted at a male audience, and only after years of being sold almost exclusively with video games and comics has it broken free and we are getting some actual shojo released.
This is due in part to active female fandom demanding such shows.

In Japan, despite the arguments raised for a neutral position for anime I would have to disagree and say that it is still directed towards a alargely male audience.
Japan still holds to old-fashioned values with concern to men and women and from my experience of talking with Japanese women they show a mindset which is accustomed to accepting male-targeted material as gender-neutral.
Since the 90's in the west there has been an increase in the clever use the female form and sex as a tool for selling products. I beleive that women have merely accepted this latest in a long line male-targeted media as being the norn and therefore gender-neutral.
Following this line of thought it is entirely possible that the rise in female fanbom can be attributed to more women who are going to just accept this without question as neutral or justifiable, especialy if they appear to be getting what they want out of it as well.

I do believe that marketing methods have improved greatly and companies trying to sell a product will use very sutble and insidious methods to do this. The kind of midset which arises from media saturation is what I have found evident in the average person.

There has been a rise in women buying products that used to be almost exclusively male before, this can be in no small part attributed to advertisers at least appearing to pander to female concerns, but ultimately they do not want to lose their male audience.
Since psychologically speaking men tend to be more brash, bigoted and opinionated their concerns are left adressed primarily and men should be left feeling comfortable and unthreatened.
Women will tend more to let thing go, they are more accepting, forgiving and passive, therefore their concerns can be addressed but not neccessarily given the attention of the male-demographic.

BTW: I'm not being sexist and have known plenty to contradict the above statement, I'm speaking in sweeping generalisations used for marketing products to as large a demographic as possible. If any of my speech appeared inflammatory to you please disregard it, i do not want an argument.
I'm afraid i do not have time to write a serious essay, these were simply my thoughts as they appeared, thoguht they might be useful. ^_^
