In America ( I can't really speak for Britan, Ireland, and Austrailia, since I don't know about society there), most people think that animation is either humor based or directed at little kids. It's really not too surprising.
The anime that gets hyped are things like DBZ, Yugi Oh, Pokemon, etc. so it's just natural for people to think that anime is crap judging from the ones I've just listed.
Then people also see/hear about perverted otaku, who get off looking naked animated girls (of course people are going to look down on anime).

Animation is a better way to express your idea and feelings
Animation is a better way to express your idea and feelings than the traditional films, I think, and those people who look down upon the animation don't understand the artical power of it.Animation is not only the artwork for children but also for adults,it describe the circumstance around all the world, not just the world round children.

i dont get that much anymore. i used to but now that anime has been plastered all over cartoon network (which i hate with a passion) most people i deal with know something about it.
my favorite instence with someone that didnt know what they were talking about came at the arcade in the mall near here. on the soul caliber 2 machine i have a profile named dark_kiba. some made a reference to her as that guy from yugioh (talking about kaiba). of cource this was from when wolfs rain was still being shown in japan.

ditto!!!! the UK is so anime deprived its unreal. the few responces that i got when asking people if they watch anime is either "what? you mean Pokemon?" or "ohhh, thats cartoon porn isnt it?"Tseng808 wrote:being from the UK... no one really knows what it even is
...i go to get DVDs
"wheres the Anime?"
"the what??"
and the odd person may recognise it as Manga
unfortunatly i have a severly limited budget and so i cant afford to buy up ever anime DVD i find, i used to rely on a fil share system called iMesh to download fansubs (entire Trigun series and Love Hina) but that went stupid and started flooding my computer with spy bots and viruses!

Yes Evangelion Unit 01, you’re not alone.
Personally when I say “oh yeah and I like anime”; before someone can utter the dreaded “Chinese cartoons” phrase, I say “and DON’T say Chinese cartoons cause their NOT” then I proceed to glare until scaring them or them asking what is this anime that has me so hooked on. So I tell them about the whole gamma of genres and how my grandma could watch anime if she wanted to. As we all know people fear the unknown which causes them to make wrong assumptions of things they don’t know, namely anime.
Basically talking a whole bunch of crap like:
“That’s for kids”
“That’s so immature”
“Why would you like that?”
And other more annoying versions of this stupid mentality about what really are anime.
Anime ignorance should be cured.

I have heard all those before, but mistaking Japanese anime for Chinese anime I think if I ever heard anyone say that I would die laughing! LOL!Kajino Rei wrote:Yes Evangelion Unit 01, you’re not alone.

It's even worse, to some people it's a case of Chinese=Japanese. I'm like: "They're not the same plus they hate it when people confuse them" and some bastards say "oh who care they're all asian". Pisses me off.Evangelion Unit 01 wrote: I have heard all those before, but mistaking Japanese anime for Chinese anime I think if I ever heard anyone say that I would die laughing! LOL!
I wouldn't die laughing, if I know the person my reaction would be head smacking them.
If they piss me off there's always the bitch-slap. LoL.

Where I live, most people don't know what it is. I ask them if they have seen any anime, and their reply, "what's that?" So then I ask, "Have you heard of Japanime?" They say no so I then go on explaining, and all the way through it they have this lost look. If they do know, they're either younger than me and watch the anime on Cheez Tv and like it, or yes, they look down on it. It can be quite frustrating sometimes.
