Naruto - Holy crap, this anime isn't even that great. I like it because I like ninjas. Oh, but wait, I don't even like Naruto! I'll have to admit, I've only seen a tiny bit of the anime, but I've read a lot of the manga. It's okay.... but it's not great... I don't know why so many people like it.
Inu Yasha - .... the beginning of this series was so repetative it pissed me off. And then the rest pretty much goes along to do the same things. It's too long, and too simple. I love Rumiko Takahashi, but Inu Yasha is a really big let down.

Not necessarilly overrated, but would someone point out what makes Evangelion so highly rated after all this time? Does it have a very clever storyline, are there some pure shockers, are there some overly violent scenes? I just don't get it
I know you can't judge a book by it's cover, but most anime's I own on DVD, were usually featured in music videos. Almost like extended trailers. Saw Kenshin, thought it looked pretty badass, got the DVDs, love it, same with Dirty Pair Flash, hope to get the original series some time also (go back to the roots, old skool is awesome. 80's FOREVAR! )
But I've seen some NGE amv's, nothing seems to appeal to me, in fact I've tended to shy away from NGE amvs. So while I'm here, anyone recommend a video that will get me hooked?
Seems like I'm missing out on something big.

Well yeah, come on man, you can't judge a series by AMVs! (Especailly a show like Evangelion). It's been said that "a good AMV makes you want to watch the series." and that is true, generally, but what's to say that the AMVs of Eva you've seen are good? And I'd bet that the appeal of Evangelion AMVs lies in people who have seen the series.Z3r01 wrote:Not necessarilly overrated, but would someone point out what makes Evangelion so highly rated after all this time? It's a massive favorite for plenty of reasons. There's no telling whether you'd like it or not, but the only real way to tell would be to get the whole series.

Actually in some respects you can. Many series I would not have even bothered watching had I not first seen some AMVs for them. It depends though on how well the AMV artist can capture the essence of the series, sometimes really well, other times, not so much.HeartbreakerByZep wrote: Well yeah, come on man, you can't judge a series by AMVs!

Well of course AMVs have value in the judging of anime. There have been things I've watched because of good AMVs. But to judge a series as 'not too good' just because you (not specifically you) haven't liked AMVs of the series, that's just crazy.Wheee_It's_Me! wrote:Actually in some respects you can. AMVs can help you form a pre-opinion of a series and put you on to series you might want to watch, and they're wonderful for that, but you shouldn't actually ever judge that you haven't seen based just on AMVs.

any anime is gonna be overrated to somebody, there is not any single anime in existance that will be liked by everybody
Good point, just about any anime is going to overrated to someone."Terminology Correction" wrote: This thread is so STUPID
But refering to your previous statement, a thread is only stupid if there's no room for discussion (that's the way I see it any way).
On topic: Voices of a Distant Star is a bit overrated. I think the big reason why it got hyped was that it was put together (for the most part) by one man. For one man, the anime is amazing. But overall, I didn't really enjoy it that much.

Not an anime loved by many people, anime loved-to-death by many people.
Most animes are for entertainment as far as I know. Natural for an anime to be loved by many, but overrated anime is one that gets overreactions by most of it's fans.
Best example yet: Inuyasha. Has a good storyline, but its fans make it sound like the best anime ever with perfect animation, perfect characters, perfect and 100% original complex plot, perfect/best everything.
THAT'S overrated.
