Anime Hair Color
Anime Hair Color.
Is it significant? When did wierd hair colors start? How did it come about?
Just questions that went through my mind when looking at the nuku nuku thread.
Thoughts? Answers? Anyone?

I've read about this before. With the crazy colours, there is a bit of symbolism involved. Let's see if I remember... there's obviously exceptions to this, but a lot of times you have:
Characters with red hair have short temper; characters with white hair are generally very calm; Characters with black hair are somewhere in between.
I also detect a pattern with blue-haired characters generally being shy, blonde characters being um... blonde ( ), pink-haired characters being all cute and childish...
There's probably several examples I could get for each, and think of more patterns if I had time, but um... I'm sort of lazy
These are not accidental though, generally speaking. Definitely an integral part of hair design that goes along with personalities.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Ahhh, so there is symbolism involved.
I was wondering about that. Thanks for your thoughts. 8)

Well, it's not original thoughts, really. I've read about that somewhere during my 'Anime Education Days' back a few years back, just trying to remember more of the detail.
Character design is no small thing (I enjoy doing it myself, actually). There's all sorts of stuff and references that go into it, but, personally - I always thought hair was the most important part of the visual design.

The hair and hair color are both symbolic sometimes especially in those manga/anime with multiple characters (main characters to be exact).
In others there's maybe some symbolism but it takes a backseat to just making characters different than the other.
