And I STILL can't find it *sigh*

It sounds like something I'd love, that's for sure. But I've never come across it anywhere (nor do I have money right now, for that matter...)
The only way I was able to get it was by ordering it online from DVD retailers. That's the best way to get anime DVDs on the cheap.

When I picked it up it was at Media Play or something like that. Although that was a year or two ago . . .

Hidden Story

Post by HeavyMetal » Fri Aug 27, 2004 12:01 am

Kiddy Grade and FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

It gets real crap reviews (most were on Vol 1 only as it is new) and I was skeptical at first. It gets accused of being nothing but fan service (doesn’t really have much) and being cheesy.

(Not to mention it sounds like something Michael Jackson gets accused of.)

If I had not seen a later volume first and an AMV I would not have bought it.

The fan service isn't really over abundant from the few volumes I've seen (1 - 4). It tends to mostly to be due to the outfits, which are usually rather graceful in a modern future way. (Except the pizza delivery joke. That was fan service, but not overly showy. More so cute.)

Its starts off like some sort of ultra lame cornball shoujo. Eclair (means lightning not the food) uses a tube of lipstick as a weapon?! The art is of unparalleled beauty though.

However under the girly pretext and save the day protect the peace of the universe Gundam Wing meets Sailormoon garbage is something a lot darker.

Certain things and clues don’t add up. With each episode you get an increasing feeling that something stinks in paradise. The darker more philosophical side starts to bubble to the surface.

I have not seen the end as its not out yet. So my impression is only from volumes 1-4. Though by 4 things are being to unravel and the illusion of paradise begins to crumble.

I go for that story within a story stuff. And the philosophical under stories.
Kind of like FLCL (Fooly Cooly). Well that was more like a story within craziness.

FLCL gets wrote off as plotless sometimes. Its really just hard to follow and highly art based in its clues.

P.S.

Legend of Black Heaven looked awesome. Does it do a good job as rock based anime?

(A lot of rock movies come off as goofy due to time compression and/or bad acting.)

Rock actually has saved the day before though. I think it was during the Panama Canal incident that AC/DC and Jimmy Hendrix were played on big mounted speakers to get a political leader out of hiding in a city. The guy left still cursing the music.

Well I'll be jiggered...someone else knows about this

Hmm...now, the underrated factor here is relative, but for the sake of getting it out of my system (...yeah, we all knew this would come):
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 - I say it's relative since:
In Japan, it's still surprisingly well received even today. In the US however, more often than not, it tends to get passed over by the US audiences more interested in the newer looking Wing and SEED. It's a damned shame since most of the people seem to ignore it almost purely on the basis that it was animated in 1979 (...let's face it, no amount of complaining is gonna fix that...if it really means that much to you, watch the movie trilogy, they cleaned up quite a bit of the animation.) Dated animation aside, the story is still one of the best Gundam titles out there in the US. (and to be fair, the animation's actually pretty good given the time period it was made in.)

...told you it was inevitable

Some anime that have a large fan-base(when I've looked) but still seem relatively unknown/underrated on the whole I would say are GTO, Hana Yori Dango, and One Piece. Great Teacher Onizuka and Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) are becoming more known since they've been brought over to the US, but I still think they're underrated for how good they are. Especially Hana Yori Dango--sure favorite of any Shojo fan. I think One Piece is one of the best anime I've ever seen (Pirates!) and is very underated. Since 4kids is going to be dubbing it/bringing it to the US, I'm even more concerned about people having a bad first impression of it. XD

Then my newest obsession which hardly anyone seems to know about (though found a few fans and got a friend or two addicted) is the Prince of Tennis. The whole Tennis thing I think throws people off and the main character being 12 (but hey--isn't Naruto 12 too? :)). This is an awesome series with great characters and charm. Comedy, tad of romance, bishonen--what more could you ask for? Tennis never looked better.

Someone mentioned Kaleido Star--only watched the first few episodes but I love it. Another underrated series. ^_^

Yeah, I got into One Piece first from the anime before the manga started coming out. 4kids (the people who did pokemon *rolls eyes*) are dubbing/editing it to air on saturday morning cartoons... my advice is to find the original japanese version. They better seriously not call Zoro, Ronald Zoro *grumbles*

4kids might be bringing over a Prince of Tennis movie. Not quite as sure about the details and I reserve judgment..

Yeah, like StarMasayume said. 4Kids has licenced OnePice. Sucks don't it. But YugiOh who is licenced under 4Kids also has an unedited version avalable for the first few disks. (not sold in walmart) So it could be hopefull that OnePice will also go uncut in Engilsh.

Censorship

Post by HeavyMetal » Sun Aug 29, 2004 9:56 pm

It would have to be really uncensored. What I've read of the YugiOh manga is good, but it seems like the darker aspects are glossed over. I guess to appeal to a wider age range.

Maybe it was because it was in Shonen Jump, but they've allowed a lot of other things.

(Thats the great thing about print. The censorship is way lower.)

The show jumps in around Ch. 7 or something, I think. It completely bypasses the fact that Kiaba tossed his foster father out an office window. The show does mention that people wondered if he was behind the death, but it was pretty vague.

Why is it the west seems to think animation is kids only. Britian changed the ninja turtles to the hero turtles because apparently ninja is a horrible word. What the hell?

Remember Parental Advisory means its good so do it when the squares aren't looking. Or if you like heavy metal make sure they are looking so you can scare them.

I would have to say:

Variable Geo
Final Fantasy Unlimited
Mouse
Photon
Scrapped Princess
Outlaw Star
Soul Taker
Riding Bean
R.O.D. (OVA & TV)
Gold Digger
Gungrave
I guess I should say something witty here right...? Too bad... :P
