whether he deserved it or not, he was considered the world championship and had the trust of the world with him, and without that trust, the people of earth never would have given up their energy for the spirit bomb
so even if he HADN'T been the championship up until then, he did come through in the end and finally really did help in saving the planet... on purpose, lol
he does it on accident in Bojack Unbound, he's the reason that gohan was released from those energy lines, so that counts for one of his saves, but accidental ones
