I believe that I still harbor some fondness for it, however...
I will quote myself, for what I coincidently posted days ago
*Soul Taker - great premise, poor execution. My mind felt assaulted by the stylization, I felt the need to go to a battered otaku shelter.
Visually it is eye-candy, but it only lasts for so long.
(spoiler) After 4 episodes, episodically hunting sister fragments, with eccentric character designs and LSD inspired action sequences, to further said story gets nauseating.

new shopping list:

X (tv)
Evangelion
Rurouni kenshin (plus OVAs and movie)
The Soultaker

dammit thats well in excess of £200........(about $400 for those who don't know)
Ever heard of bootleg dude... the actual legit bootleg if there is such a thing, with real production company's doing the dvd's. That will save you mucho dinero, if you need help finding out whom the good ones are, send me a note on the d.l...

But if your gonnna get at least one legit series, get the Evangelion, i think the boxset is worth it, and the series just garners my respect. I have perfect bootlegs, the same as the import versions, but just compacted on two cd's, and their exactly the same.

Buy/rent the first DVD... if you're like me, you will absolutely hate the first 2 episodes cause you will have no clue wtf is going on and why you should care. The show is so confusing visually that you will have to watch these 3 times before the fighting/plot makes any sense.

And then there is episode 3, the absolute money-maker of the series (if you think a battle-hardened school girl constantly firing off weapons is uber fun to watch). It also gives you a better sense of where the show is going and why Kyousuke is a likable character... but it also misleads at the same time.

The second DVD will give you none of what you were expecting and the low budget really shines on this disc. It is neccesary to watch though because of some revelations to the plot and the introduction of characters you will see again at the end. The following discs though really won me over again, and the end is exactly what it needed to be... bizarre yet somehow comforting.

I've only seen a few minutes of the show...the opening sequence (I disliked the opening song, I must say), plus some scene of a girl running through a graveyard and shooting some guys up. THAT caught my attention. Unfortunately, within the next minute or so I lost it again...and when my insomniac stepfather chose to sit down on the couch and join me for some TV I decided I didn't want him thinking I'm any weirder than he already does, and I changed the channel.

Most people I've spoken to about the series disliked it. ::shrug::

I don't like Soultaker and I wish TechTV would stop showing reruns of it in order to show something better and preferable new. :?

The only thing I really liked about this show is the animation, and even that took awhile to grow on me. It's very stylish/stylized in terms of the coloring. Nevertheless, the characters fail to appeal to me, and when that happens, there goes the show, right down the drain. It's also kind of confusing (though I haven't seen all of it).

As others have said, it has a pretty bad opening (I actually LIKED the Scrapped Princess one... but that's another matter).

I'd say, either avoid it, or rent the first disc and see what you think. It's not a great show, but in my opinion it's not a terrible one either. It's a decent way to waste time, but I wouldn't spend money on it myself.

I like it in the same way I like 80s hair bands. I rock out with it while trying not to laugh.

It's be better if placed before a show with 80% less brooding.

BTW, best quote from any anime I can think of is in the dub of episode 3. "Why send flowers when you can say it all with guns." 8-) I did a double take when I first heard that, my friends did the same during a later showing.

Excellent quote, I remember I double taked, the possible HallMark-ization potential of the quote going through my mind, and finally laughing my ass off (circa 2002). Should have gone onto the Quotation thread, but alas I think the topic should step down gracefully now.

I like the opening song (out of novelty adoration value). Wouldn't mind owning the OST for that 1 track.

This is one of my all time "I can't believe I bought this" series. I bought the first DVD back when it came out and....that was that. I caught some more of it recently on G4/TechTV and after seeing FLCL I can say SoulTaker is like FLCL, but serious. The really odd camera angles, the backgrounds of wackiness. You're better off turning off the video and just listening to the audio. Either that or purchase some crack from the nearby dealer then watch it.
At least FLCL was plain wacky so that made the crazy on-screen action was substantiated.
