I've seen plenty of people write into question/answer columns on other web pages and have read interviews with voice actors answering this question. Once you go through the acting schools and start trying to get jobs in acting you may end up working your way in by voice acting. You'd have to care more about being an actor than being an otaku to land something like this.
In short it's more than likely you'll NEVER become one, just like those that want to direct anime or get a job in that industry. Go do something else that's a little more grounded in reality than "chasing your dreams" or "reaching for the stars". You'll grow out of this phase after a couple years.

I love voice acting! It is so much fun! Well it is once you get passed the fact that it is a long process.

I have not done any official voice acting, but I am a TV actress. I intend on getting into voice acting, but my agent says I should stay a screne actress. He says that, (get this) "Voice acting is for those who cann't show their faces on a Television screne."
Can you believe that?!? Had the nerve to dis some very good looking voice actors. The nerve!
He told me I am too talented to be a voice actress!!! :x He makes me so mad sometimes! He disses the hottness of Kirby Morrow!!!

I think voice acting is more fun than TV acting. But that's just me.

(Now that that's out of my system) :D

Sorry about the double post. (I manage to do this a lot. I have to stop doing this)

I dubbed a little bit of my friends' DBGT DVD for him. I can immitate little Goku's voice and my friend wanted me to record it (in sync to what Goku was saying) and then he removed the Japanese audio and added the English audio using Windows Movie Maker (I hate that program).
It was fun. There was a great 'cast' to work with.
Little Goku - Me
Pan - Angie
Trunks - Cameron J. (CJ)
Giru - Me
Bebi - CJ

We dubbed three episodes together. If I can get the episodes from him, I will upload them to my website and post it somewhere.

Sigh. Monica Rial was doing a panel about this over at Anime Iowa, I would have gone to the panel, if one of the people in my group that went to the con didn't have to be home at a certain time or his mom would worry about him, stupid minors.

Anyway, while I haven't' done any professional voice work, I have used my voice in some local radio play productions. If you ever have the chance to do some voice work of any kind, try it out, it's usually a lot of fun.

Well, sounds like somebody had their dreams crushed.

We had three voice actors (actresses) at anime detour con last spring. They gave us some insite into how hard it is to do voice dubbing. They also gave us a chance to try voice acting to videos they brought, it was fun to watch these young people try it, some of them were very good. It is hard to get the emotions into the part along with fitting the words to the actions not to mention lip flap. :? They also often do not see the anime until they enter the sound room. The anime "Colorful", very fan service, has an extra that gives a parody look into the voice acting, funny. If you would like to know about these things go to dubreview.com or get on the actors fan pages to ask them. Go to a con, Monica Rial is at most of them :) , and talk to the actors, they are very helpfull.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Harlock had a point about caring more about the skill and profession itself than otakudom, and the sheer numbers of probability against it...
However, to anyone seriously considering it, I applaud it. Be ready to adapt to demands/changes to land a job. It is possible. Convention attendance is good for aspiring voice actors.

CASE STUDY (yay, I feel like a collegiate lecturer)
An interesting thing popped up in my endless recesses of memory, when I read some of the spirited posts on this topic. I was reminded of this.(Please don't bank on this to break into the industry) If you own or know someone who owns this, play the episode commentary (the dub producer at RightStuf Int.) of "My Fair Lady" EP 05 of Boogiepop Phantom I believe. The discourse between the producer and the voice actor of the character in that EP weaves an interesting food for thought about how he got his VA resume started. An amusing anecdote to be sure.

i'd love to get into voice acting, but it's a tough profession, especially for a beginner. it takes a TON of work to even get entry-level parts...

however, that doesn't mean i can't fangirl certain VAs/seiyuu (Japanese VAs)

my fave VAs (and some of their more famous roles):
Scott McNeil (Duo Maxwell, Koga from Inu Yasha)
Brad Swaile (Quatre Winner, Adult Gohan)
Eric Stuart (Brock/James from Pokemon, Seto Kaiba)
Crispin Freeman (Arucard, Tsume)
Wendee Lee (Faye Valentine, Yahiko)
Steven Jay Blum (Spike Spiegel)
Jennifer Hale (Electra in the CB movie, also did a lot of game work)
Lia Sargent (Milly Thompson, Arashi Kishu)
Dorothy Melendrez (Meryl Stryfe, Kaoru Kamiya)

My fave seiyuu:

Takehito Koyasu (Il Palazzo, Fujimiya Aya)
Shinichirou Miki (Kudou Yohji, Katan from Angel Sanctuary)
Midorikawa Hikaru (Heero Yuy, Schuldich)
Nozomu Sasaki (Yusuke Urameshi, Naoe Nagi)
Toshihiko Seki (Duo Maxwell, Legato Bluesummers)
Kudou Yohji is sinfully delicious.

Nah. I'm just grounded in reality. I drift back and forth from Realist to Existentialist.
If a child ever says they want to be an astronaut when they grow up, tell them the harsh reality of it. How many astronauts have there been since man's first step into space? How many of them are DEAD because of traveling there?
Remember: Don't let anyone tell you you can't do or be something. You're going to find out you can't do or be later on and have to settle for a crappy-ass job pushing pencils or flipping burgers.
