Why does it seem anime is bootleged more that other things?

Post by Evangelion Unit 01 » Mon Nov 08, 2004 5:11 pm

Before I got into anime getting unlicenced merchendice seemed very unlikely considering all thw work and time and low pay, plus it was very dangerous. So then how come when I go on the net, ebay, or sometimes even at cons there always seems to be a very healthy supply of bootleged anime avaliable. Why is it so easy to bootleg anime dvd or even other merchandice that is anime related?

Just remember when replying to not post bootleged sites thank you.

Well, from what I've heard, a lot of bootlegged anime (correct me if I'm wrong) is manufactured in China. And making a safe assumtion that the government isn't too interested in anime, it really isn't that surprising that there's an abundance of bootlegs.

that and it's a lot easier to copy the anime from TV in Japan, send it to a friend in the US/China/wherever and fansub it

It's not bootlegged more than other things. Not by a long shot. Where would you get an idea like that?

It just seems that way, yep - if you specifically look for cheap anime, you come across it easily. But try looking for unrealistically cheap games or music, and you will easily bump into places that sell them. As with anime bootlegs, these will probably be from 'companies' out of Asia, or from Eastern Europe.

Yeah, when you consider designer purses, live-action movies, and CDs, anime isn't really up there on the "most bootlegged" list. You probably notice it more since it can be pirated in quite organized ways over the internet.

And yea, a trip to some stores in Chinatown can be quite an eye-opener in this regard - anime is barely a small fraction of what is stocked in the 'too cheap to be true' section.

i bet its just focus, you know it more, you see it more, you like it more, so you notice it more. its like that with anything your into, bootlegs are a big part of anime (not in a good way) so you know of it.

And on anime sites we tend to discuss it a lot more, then say, bootleged shoes.
