Having been here for about two and a half months now, I'd say it's definately something worth thinking about.
Poetic_Kaos, Berserk aired on NTV, but I don't know the extent of what's on Japanese cable (I get limited cable reception, about 6-7 channels including TV Tokyo). As far as 'excessive violence', are you saying that American TV doesn't have excessive violence? We're the country that didn't have a problem with the big Canadian vs. American battle in the South Park movie, but we did object to the language.
It's all really a question of Japan having different cultural values, like Otohiko mentioned. For example, the drinking age is 20, and there's not an underaged drinking problem because they define 'drinking problem' differently, as drinking in Japan is a culturally-accepted norm and you're expected to go to the bar with your fellow co-workers at the end of the day. What America would define as 'rampant alcoholism', Japan would define as 'normal.'
There are stores where you can turn around from looking at the regular DVDs and see incredibly graphic doujinshi. The porno mags at 7/11 are in the same rack as the weekly manga-books. But, in general, it's all a matter of perspective... look at European countries where drinking and sexual activity at younger ages are accepted. Same basic concept.
I wouldn't say that's true. Do you think that the panty shots in anime are geared towards the 10-year-old kid watching the show or the 40-year-old salaryman buying the DVD? Although you're right in that the 10-year-old kid still sees the panty shot...Otohiko wrote:The Japanese have no trouble admitting that sex=awsm, and they don't seem to mind relaying that to the younger generation.
