About the only TV cartoon/anime I watch is the Simpsons. I watch that, then come back to my room and watch some anime. Or play a game, I don't know.

Anime club, conventions, private DVD's and fansubs (mostly the latter, unfortunately). I haven't really watched commercial TV in 3 years.
A good, easy and cheap way to get some good anime without resorting to [things which this forum doesn't allow discussing, you know] is to check up on video rental stores in your area and see if they have anime you can borrow - and I suspect they probably will have something (eh, even a store in a middle-of-nowhere town where I lived before had a very good collection). Just make sure to read the labels and all, lest you want to end up with something age-inappropriate (I assume you're below legal age, rightly or wrongly...)

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

i mainly just go to best buy and get what looks interesting. i stoped watching cartoon network when they started showing good anime that was edited a lot. if you have the money this seems to work best.

Just watching anime on the television is not the way to go... trust me. Unless you enjoy seeing some of your favorite shows hacked beyond recognition. (*coughCARDCAPTORScough*)
Renting is probably the cheapest way to go, though a lot of time even some of the biggest rental places have a limited selection of titles. The Blockbuster near me's an example of this. x.x So I usually stick to buying it on DVD (or boxed sets for the longer series), or watching it on Comcast's On Demand. Considering it has a half-decent dub, but that's another story entirely...

Excellent way to do it if you can afford it is Netflix. You pick 3 DVDs and they mail it to you first class. Then, when you're done watching, you mail them back, postage already paid. Then you select 3 more, etc. I've been doing it for about a month so far, and for $20 I managed to watch the entirety of X. What I'm probably going to do in future is pull out 3 different animes at once, and pick the one that I like the most to follow up on when I return them.

Mainly I see someone mention a series (most often in one of the two forums I frequent), or watch a trailer, think "hey that looks shibby", maybe read up on it a little, and if it's still looking good , buy it.
So far I've only gotten burned once by this formula....damn Milk Chan...
The only series I've watched fansubbed was One Piece, up to episode thirty something a long while ago.
