The biggest reason is the perception that animation is only for kids. The rest of the world has accepted animation as just another medium in which there is no limits to the story telling. While the big doe eyed animation of Walt Disney may have influenced many of the early anime artists, it also cemented into the American public's culture that cartoons are for kids. This perception is changing, but it will take a generation to take place.

Another reason is that there was some pretty low quality in the presentation of the first anime to reach America in the 1960's up to the 1980's. Dubbing was aweful back then to the point that nothing matched the moving of the character's lips. Add to the fact that the stories were edited until they were just for kids and you could comparitively say there was better animation out there. Today we enjoy anime that is state of the art in every way with motion that flows like liquid. Years ago the frame rate was so slow everything looked choppy and cheap. Like after eating a bad ruben sandwich, the public did not want to give it another try. Things have changed greatly and will continue to do so.

Here's my question: when did anime turn into a cult? Why do we have to "turn-on," convert people to, or otherwise expose the uninterested into anime in the first place? My case in point:
LindenRathan wrote:now he still watches gundam and even plays the pokemon games as do I but he never realized "hey this is anime" and i tryed to explaine it to him and he still didnt get it so i told his mom i was gonna kidnap him for awhile(did the same to my girlfriend who was into the same thing ,yes everything was planed)
If they don't want to watch it, fine. Seriously, why do people not like anime? Do you like every show out there? Why do you hate the ones you don't like? It only increases the infamy to try and press it on them. If they want to watch it, they will.

This goes back to the cultural acceptance issue. Most people see animation and they think Bambi and the Care Bears. This is a hard thing for people to wrap their mind around initially. A compelling storyline that draws them in will work only if they give it a chance. To be honest, there are not that many people who do not watch anime who sit and say "I should give an anime series a chance." First, most anime series are not stand alone episodes in nature. If you do not catch the series from the first episode, it is going to get pretty confusing.

You almost need to sit someone down, think of what they like and tailor that to showing them something that will strike their fancy. This is the best way to overcome the perceptions and get them interested at watching other titles. For my mother a school teacher it took Azumanga Diaoh. For my best friend from college who is an Army Captain, it took Robotech: The Macross Saga. There are series that push people's button's but they are not likely to be found as the first series a person encounters without help from others.

If you came to anime on your own without someone introducing you, congratulations. You are better able to navigate what is out there than others.

Such stereotypes as - Japanese Cartoon - while humorous, still degrading to anime.

My theory is:
They just think they're to cool for it.
I can claim the title as being the first person on a-m-v.org to submit an AMV with the artist KJ-52 on it. Yay. Hahaha.
Where my jello? I need it to go with my Cola, Rice, Puddin, Steak, macoroni, apple, peanut butter, plastic, baking soda, and cheese sandwhich!

thats true most of the people i know who dont like anime HAVE NEVER WACHED IT!!. Another thing is it's not like ALL anime is the same. Each show is different so how could people 'just not like it'. They would prbably find an anime they like if they just stop being so narrow minded. Pertty much the only difference between anime and western t.v. is the ANIMATION part. The funny thing is those who say anime is gay usually watch family guy, simpsons and other such shows...

WAIT! I got it!
What's the one thing that's (dare I say it) more popular than anime?
MTV! It's the reason ppl are saying that anime sux. They'd rather see the next Snoop Dog music video than look at some anime.
(For those o' you who DO watch MTV a lot, it's not an insult in any form. It's JUST my theory) :?

There are people out there who think Anime= cartoon, cartoon = children there for only children watch Anime.

These are the same people who thinks Video games are just for children.

Wrong Anime has its own way, its pulls you in with its complex story lines, amazing animation, deep characters. On the other hand we have Gag-Anime, witch offer a good laugh, funny characters, weird and wonderful animation. Another reason mayby being Japanese, they are put off by the cultural difference's.

But who am I to say why this and why that. People are induviduals, they dont all like the same things..... acpt it and move on.....
