Although I actually haven't seen any Gainax series since FLCL, to be fair...
Perhaps a good time to start catching up

The bit that really annoys me about Konomini is that there were so many things they completely failed to explore. Most of them needed it, too.

I thought the ending to FLCL was pretty good, though the first time I saw it, it had me practically yelling "NOOOOOO that can't be it, I want more!"...

Heh, that's not to say I didn't like Gainax's endings in general! (note how out of my top 5 favorite anime, 3 would be by Gainax, and I only have a qualm about KareKano's lack of ending...).

The FLCL ending is good, but it certainly remains open-ended and even ambiguous.
