Attack of the Bioroids

The Australian dub version of Macross: Do You Remember Love. I have never heard a more flat emotionless reading of the script. And inaccurate translation when I finally compared it to a fansub.

I don't watch any anime dubbed if I have a choice.

I remember that one being quite aweful, but I don't knock all dubs. Cowboy Bebop has an excellent dub that while not always faithful to the sub, it very fitting and entertaining. The dub for Hellsing is more appropriate in my mind. A bunch of English demon and vampire killers running around England plying their trade should be done in English with an English accent. :P The more international the story, the more cause to try to do it in the language of the characters.

My main concern with dubs is that they do not change the character by a different performance. The greatest example of this is the much maligned Lynn Minmei from Macross. In the original Japanese, she is sultry and a very different woman from the whiny, headache inducing brat portrayed by Reba West in Robotech. It was like watching a completely different series when I saw the original Macross series in Japanese.

I found no difference between the sub and dub. The once thing I did find was that ti was the first anime series I bought and couldnt be bothered finishing. Despite many recomendations of high praise, I found it rather dull.

Your taste sucks. ;)

Anyway, the voice actor matching is bad Jinto is 17 - not in his 30's, as he sounds in the dub.

Hmm, terrible dubs, eh?

Well, more to do with how they spoilt the entertainment of the shows than anything (if it's a bad series, I wouldn't really care about the quality of the dub) I'd probably have to list the following as my personal pet hates:

Ranma 1/2 - yes, its age is mostly to blame, but the dubbing for Ranma is absolutely abysmal. However, it'd be mean to concentrate on the older series, so this'll be my only submission from that era: otherwise you can bet your bottom dollar that Kimagure Orange Road would be here too...

Fruits Basket - this seems to be a bit of a regional thing, as all the British people I know who've heard the dub hate it, but most of the Americans I know who've heard it love it. Well, no matter, I can't stand it.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - the voices just *do not fit the characters*. At all.

Azumanga Daioh - ladies, you do not, no matter what you think, sound like teenagers, and you never will again. Just... give it up, yeah?

And finally, I have to put in a vote for Neon Genesis Evangelion - the only show that's made me actually want to kill the person responsible for voicing a main character. I was so glad when I got my hands on the subbed version (this was after having to watch the first three VHS's dubbed). Also - Oscar? Hello, it's spelt with an "A"! A-Su-Ka! Is it really that hard to pronounce?

THat's not to say that there aren't any good dubs out there, however. Cowboy Bebop was nicely done, and Spirited Away was excellent. In the old crowd, probably the most impressive films I've seen for dubbing were the first two Patlabors (though the series are... less impressive, to say the least)

yes, CB was awesome and i was pleased, being it's one of my favorites.

Spirited Away was great too, Disney seems to do an exellent job dubbing as you will notice w/ other disney/ghibli releases.

also, i thought the tenchi series weren't that great, i guess it could have been worse....i especially hate Ayeka's voice, she sounds like a snobby, old woman  for being probably one of my favorite anime, i really disliked the dub, cept ryoko, i liked her voice, but shes just the coolest anyway. :D

got two here
Bible Black yea, hentai dubs normally suck, and i'm sure i can but like 10 other people in place of this, but if you say "oh (male japanese name with 3 syllables) you sold your sould to a demon i can't believe it" in a monotone voice in one breath while the character is jerkin him, it's a definate crap dub

Bastard!!! one line proves this:
I'll kill you dead

Any anime dubbed by Blue Water Studios (though I heard their dub for Gundam Zeta was actually BETTER than the dub for Gundam SEED). Does anyone have thoughts about that?
Actually Blue Water did an overall surprisingly good job with Zeta. Prob. one of the better Gundam dubs out there right now (0080's still got the best of 'em, but this is in the upper ranks) (the only real downside's being in the casting for the narration and Haro. Then again, for some reason the dubs frequently fuck up Haro. That said, kudos to BW for actually getting Shinta and Qum to really sound like children)

Definitely has me looking back at their dub for G Gundam and wondering which of the two was a fluke (hopefully G. Then again, no one's ever really mastered super robot dubbing anyways, shy of maybe Big O.)

That said, my votes:

-Macross II: Lovers Again
-Aura Battler Dunbine (I've said it before, I'll say it again. Carl Macek just needs to avoid putting accents into anything he oversees the dub of, it just makes the poor guy look like a prejudiced bastard.)
-Mazinger Z (released in the states as Tranzor Z. Now 1/3 of its original length with assorted changes to Americanize in ways Robotech and SM couldn't even dream of)
now for the one I know I'm gonna get hit for:
-Robotech: The Macross Saga (Between Quamzin (don't get me started on the name changes) having a 'there and gone again' British accent, Captain Global changing from an Italian to a Russian with an accent that was just begging for a line like: "Scramble all fighters! On Soviet Macross, fighters scramble you!", and the fact the person cast as Minmay was, kindly put, tone deaf...this is the kind of show which only lives thanks to nostalgia)
