I am doing a report on the cultural anxieties expressed in the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena. I have already watched all the episodes twice and wrote down quotes, but no episode numbers. For the sake of time I think I might have to buy the manga, since it would be easier to flip to a page and get the quote, but I know the manga is slightly different. (I already have the 1st book and there are four more.) It's a fifteen page report about the economy troubles about a decade ago in Japan and the new emperor Akihito (I think thats how its spelled), as well as gender role evolution. This all happened during the time period of the text I am reporting on. Anyway, it would be a pain to have to write 15 pages and then look for support... Ok I'm babbling. Anyways, thats the deal. I just wanted to get some expert opinions!
Teehee. Thanks lots!

Are you talking about the different pursuits/troubles that the duelists have in the series? For example Sionji was looking for eternal friendship or Juri not being able to let go of the girl she was infatuated with?
Each duel had a specific theme. This theme was show in the music that was played and the motivation of the opposing duelist.
The manga does not follow the episodes closely and deviates from them quite a bit.
As for changing gender roles in Japan, this past month has been a very exciting one. For the first time, they are revising the rules of succession to allow a woman to acend the throne. The Royal family has a daughter but no male heir. This is the first time this has occured in the over 1000 years of the monarchy.
