Let's hold off the discussion until we have more detail.
Personally, I'm more offended by the idea of lumping 'anime' into one pile to cover all the genres and styles within it than by people responding poorly to it

Re: Response to non-anime fans
Well most of the time if someone I know does not like anime then usually it is not discussed unless they are curious about a certain anime shirt I am wearing or something like that, and sometimes they say it is childish, and I just really shake my head sigh, and explain to them Berserk or some other very NON childish anime.Dio KH wrote:My nephew watched some anime episodes the other day. He said, "They're cartoony, why do you watch that stuff. It's kinda dumb." I was speechless. I know lots of non-anime fans, but nobody has said a bad opinion about it. How would you respond to something like that?
Today though I had sort of a simualr experience. I was on my lunch break playing kingdom hearts for Gameboy Sp, and I really am loving the game so fare, I am playing as Riku right now, and I really think that this is a great game, then one of my co-workers comes up behind me and says and I quote exactly, "Hay, my son has that same game." Me, "Really, this is really a great game, I love it so far." Him, "Yeah, news flash he's seven!" I really felt like telling him to go fuck himself. Seriously, I was just sitting there not even saying a word to the guy, and at work usually I get along real well with him, and he with me, and I really seriously was pissed! So, I know how you feel other then proving them wrong, in your case just say dumb is merily an opinoun, or ignore it. Other than that you can't do much to them without getting in some sort of trouble. I tell you if I was not at work I serious would have cused that guy out.

I usually shrug my shoulders and say "to each their own" or something like that. It's hard to argue with most kids. It's better to pique their interest by just being sure to watch something that might make them take notice. Again, depends on their age and interests. Otherwise, don't bother. Some people will never like animation, no matter it's subject matter.
As far as the co-worker goes, I get the feeling he was just giving you a case of the ass. Be sure to give as good as you get. My usual response is that I like doing other things than drink beer and watch football.

Nephew
He's a teenager. He saw Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha, & Ghost in the Shell s.a.c. He saw one episode of each and didn't really get into the story. Also, for Ghost in the Shell, it was a stand alone episode. I'm not trying to convert him; anime is not a religion or a cult (although I watch it religously) I wanted to SHARE the experience of anime. I wanted to hear your experiences with non-anime fans. I can't kill him, he's family.

Ah! Then just let it alone. He's a teenager and therefore he's automatically cooler than you. If he'd been exposed to it by his peers or discovered it on his own, that's one thing. But because you, an adult (I'm assuming), was doing it first, he's not interested.Dio KH wrote:He's a teenager. He saw Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha, & Ghost in the Shell s.a.c. When I'm dealing with non-anime fans, anime is not something I tend to bring up.
