Fushigi Yuugi is about a 15 y/o girl who is pulled into an alternate world that resembles ancient China. According to a local legend, she is called the "Priestess of Suzaku" by the people and undertakes a quest summon the beast god Suzaku and save the kingdom. The main character, Miaka, is a slacker with a big appetite for food and for romance, so there's plenty of comedy along the way. Along with the comedy and the romance, there's a fair amount of swords-and-sorcery action.
And also, you're doing yourself a disservice by excluding all shows with mechs simply because they have mechs. There are plenty of shows with mechs such as Escaflowne, Evangelion, and Full Metal Panic that have other things mixed in to make them more interesting. I personally don't like gorefest action shows, but I know that there are a few of them worth watching. Anyway, for recommendations, aside from FY and the shows I mentioned:
Noir (two chicks shoot a bunch of people)
Haibane Renmei (slow-moving show about angel girls)
Ayashi no Ceres (rather violent, but well-drawn, emotional, and romantic)
Scrapped Princess (fantasy/action/some of everything, not out on DVD yet)
Excel Saga (on Crack, but worth watching)
Fruits Basket

...This thread makes the anime gods cry.
Fushigi Yuugi is basically an anime soap opera.
In that department it's not as good as Marmalade Boy, but nothing is.
If you got a girl watch FY with her, they love that and FY could be worse.

Yes! That I can do!
Ah My Goddess, or "Oh My Goddess!" as it is also known, was a manga by a Mr. Fujishima that I think might still be running in Japan. It was made into a short 5 episode OAV (direct to video release) in the mid-1990's. Later, a short 15-minute (or less) TV series was made featuring the main characters in "Super-deformed" funny quickies. Think like if someone made a quick Tom & Jerry length episode of an anime.
It later got made into a full-length movie which was really good, and now has a new TV series airing in Japan right now.
The story is about a college student named Kenichi who is short, kinda lonely, and often gets picked on by the more senior students and fellow members of his auto-club. One day, he tried to make a phone call and dials the "Goddess Help-Line". All of a sudden, the goddess Belldandy (a hash of Verthandi, an actual Norse Goddess), appears in front of him saying she will grant him one wish.
Kenichi thinks this is a joke being pulled on him and says to her, "My wish is for you to be my girlfriend!!!" Little does Kenichi know that she actually meant it! So now, the two are together and have to go through life hiding the fact that she's a goddess, and other obstacles that come in love.
Good stuff. Worth watching. Gets really good when Belldandy's sisters show up.
More later

Hikaru No Go description
Now to answer your question about the other anime series you were interested in:
Hikaru No Go features a young boy (aptly named Hikaru) in elementary school. It starts off with him rummaging through his grandpa's attic trying to find junk to sell since his parents cut off his allowance (they'll do that if you don't get good grades!).
While rummaging around, he finds an old Go board with blood stains on it.
(In case you don't know: Go is rumored to be the OLDEST board game in history. Even older than Chess! It's supposed to have been around for about 4000 YEARS!!! The object is to capture as much "territory" of the board as possible by placing black and white stones in strategic places to secure your land. You can capture other stones by surrounding them, and also make patterns that make invading a space impossible. Easy to learn, difficult to master essentially)
Anyway, when Hikaru finds the board, a voice calls out to him. It is the voice of a ghost named "Fujiwara Sai" (Sai for short). In the feudal days of Japan, he was the Go teacher to the Emperor, until he was challenged by a rival Go teacher who CHEATED to win! Even though Sai witnessed the cheating, he could not prove it, and lost in disgrace. He then committed suicide by drowning himself in a river as a form of repentence.
But he could not ascend to heaven, as his love to play Go was too strong. He still desired to find the "Divine Move", a move so perfect in Go, then it could not be beaten no matter what! Because of this, his soul was attached to the Go board, and only reappears when a certain someone can see the stains on the board.
That person, is Hikaru! But he was not the first! Almost a century earlier, another boy found the board and became one of the greatest Go players in history under Sai's tutelage. However, he died at the young age of 35, and thus Sai was again confined to the Go board.
Now, Sai's soul is now stuck to Hikaru like a moth to a flame, and the only for Hikaru to live normally again is to quence Sai's thirst for playing Go by playing it himself.
During his journey through the world of Go, Hikaru makes new friends, faces difficult challenges, and accidentally makes a rival in a young boy named Akira, son of a pro Go player who is considered a modern day master of the game.
Learn the insides and outs of Go through this manga and anime series, and learn why it can be so intense, that sometimes a win or loss can determine your future or not!
It's really good stuff, and each issue of the manga in Shonen Jump comes with instructions on how to play Go yourself. From the very beginning of the manga with beginners instructions, to later issues with more complex moves, tricks, and puzzles.
Hikaru No Go! Now available in manga form thanks to Shonen Jump, and expect the anime to be available stateside sometime soon! (Someone must want to license it!?)
