Gundam Seed Name

Post by Squall08 » Sat Aug 30, 2003 9:05 pm

Alright. Seed is my favorite anime of all time I think. Anyways

For those of you know of it.. i was just wondering what is up with Asuran's name?? In the anime they call him Asuran (jap ver.) In magazines (newtype) and websites they call him Athrun....
Uhh Athrun does not sound like Asuran...

Is the kanji for his name said as athrun.. or did somebody out there in this world do a bad job dubbing asuran into english?

I really hope bandai keeps his name Asuran..

the closest the japanese language can come to athuran is asuran, the gundam seed writers had intended it as athuran from the start, but they couldn't say it in japanese :p

That would make sense. This is the first series I've seen that has had such malleable names; it seems like the pronunciations and spellings change every few episodes, and it gets annoying after awhile.
Athrun/Asuran -I like the second better, although if the intent was the first, I just wish it could be pronounced like that.

Athha/Asha - It always seems to be pronounced the second way, although I suppose it could be the same situation as Athrun

Fllay/Flay/Frey/Fray -Who in their right mind would name their child Flay? (If you don't understand why, look it up in a dictionary)

Miriallia/Milliaria -I think it flows better the second way, and seems to be pronounced like that anyway, but oh, well.

Murrue/Maryu -Pronunciation has been consistently the second case.

Mu La Flaga/all other combinations -I still can't figure out a spelling from an auditory transliteration.
Natarle Badgiruel/all others -see above
Rau Le Creusat/all others -see above

Yzak/Isaac -Last time I checked, a "y" did not sound like that.

Dearka/Deakka -Silent "r", maybe?

Waltfeld/Bartfeldt -I hear a "b" and an ending "t", but maybe it's just me.

Lacus/Lakusu/Rakusu -It almost always comes out with an extra sound after the "s"; I wonder why?

This is just me generally wondering about the series; otherwise it is excellent, and well worth a watch.

Knowing Japanese phonology, some corrections as to what I think those should be. Note one important aspect: Some "u" and "o" sounds are occasionally near-omitted (there's a hint of them, but they're not fully pronounced).

Fray=Furei
Mu La Flaga=Mu Ra Furaga
Natarle Badgiruel=Natarure Badogirueru
Rau Le Creusat=Rau Re Kureusato
Yzak=Aizaaku
Waltfeld=Barutofueruduto

As far as R/L - actually, these are pretty interchangeable in Japanese, which is why they often say one instead of the other...

I have not actually taken Japanese, so I am stuck with listening to it and gleaning what I can from friends who have, so while I am aware of the l/r issue, I am in no way qualified to determine what the direct translation of the names are; I just write them as I hear them.
Actually, when I wrote my original post, the first name listed for each entry was retreived from the gundamofficial website, which was part of the reason I was annoyed; the translations you gave make much more sense.

Correction - this would probably be more right (and there is technically no "du" in Japanese (though there is the 'voiced' "tzu" which closely resembles it)

I've taken Japanese, but it's really just my inner phonologist kicking in :P Japanese actually has a fairly straightforward phonetic/phonological system. Phonetically, there's really only one sound that is physically different from something English speakers usually make (the Japanese "f", which is a bilabial fricative as opposed to the English labiodental fricative); and phonologically, it's all about basic consonant-vowel syllables (with the exception of the "n" coda) - just gotta remember the cases where some of the vowels (usually 'u', 'o' and 'i') are reduced.

/*phew* end lecture :roll:

...you've still got me beat hands down in the language department. Thanks for the info!
