Evangelion Series

Post by jenny2blue4mina » Wed Apr 20, 2005 12:31 pm

Ok...I'm throwing this one out to everyone....I have seen the entire series of Evangelion already...Soon I will be leaving Korea and heading home to all of my greatly missed animes so this is where my question starts....Should I bother investing in the Director's Cut or Platinum edition of Evangelion (is it really worth the money) or is it exactly the same as the original release and I would be wasting my money....I am looking for anyone out there that has either both sets and has watched both sets (as in Original and Director/Platinum) and knows whether or not I should just buy the damn things..... :D

You could get them, and if you're loaded then sure why not. But if your money is precios then it'd be beter to spend it on something els, like witch hunter robin.

There's a topic around here somewhere that describes the difference, but here it is in a nutshell.

The quality is MUCH brighter and better, no more jumping frames, you can actually tell more colors apart from others, it's much easier to edit with, and the Platinum series DVD 6 and 7 come with Directors Cut eps of 21-26 along with the normal episodes. The only thing we're waiting on is the movies, lol

I'll probably get the entire platinum collection soon enough since I'm an obsessive compulsive person.

I actually bought a used boxed set (mint condition) and the D/C version of epsiodes 21-23 from the used section in Amazon. I also bought End of Evangelion new. In total I spent $100 for all that.

From the clips and screenshots that I have seen, the platinum version won out. I also read somewhere that there was some additional footage here and there. However, I also read that some of the English dubbing (which I happened to like) was changed a little. I'm not sure in what capacity.VAs maybe?

I picked up the 7th and last disc for the Platinum Evangelion series this Tuesday. I thought it was well worth it. You will never have seen the series look better. The colors are vibrant, there is no jitter and the sound is crystal clear.

I considered the extras to be a mixed bag though. Most of the discs have animatics of episodes. It is kind of neat to see how a director blocks out the action for an episode of animation. But if you are looking for behind the scene insight first hand from Gainax or Hideki Anno, you are not going to find it here. The cast commentaries are done by the English voice actors. I didn't find too much in the way they spoke to the series other than they sounded like old friends happy to see each other once again. There are a couple documentaries, one on the 5.1 remix for the sound and two on the mythology of Evangelion, but these again are exclusively done by ADV people. If you are new to the series, you may find some of this interesting, but most of it could have been found by Eva Otaku scouring the web. There is also a Tiffany Grant documentary of her massive Asuka colllection... Then the obligatory clean opens and closes.

Each DVD comes with a booklet that contains liner notes for the episodes, a glossary of terms, information on the Evas and Angels, and a short essay about an aspect of the series.

Not all of the extras were ones that I was wanting, but I am extremely impressed with the Platinum series. You will never see it look better. If you are a fan of Evangelion.... definately a must have. I only wish that like the Japanese release that this collection was based off of, they would have included the remastered copies of the films.

Ok thanks everyone...I hope this will be left open for sometime since I have been seeing this question floating around in a few unanswered forums...I think I might as well spend the money getting the Platinum set.....It would be worth it in the long run I guess...Thanks everyone for the few comments.....If you want to add more it would be appreciated.... 8-)

1 )make sure to get universal dvd player, i think korea is a different reigon

2 )if your short on cash, a good place to find the series are used cd shops, they usually buy n sell dvds[and have no idea how much anime costs new], thats where i picked up the NGE boxset for $80 used, as opposed to $170 new at suncoast
