I didn't watch neither the American nor the Japanese version of One Piece but the German. And generally all voices fit to each character.
But is it as important as it seems to be that some voices are too childish? Of course the Japanese versions are always much better than any other one but the story is the same... Isn't that more important?
I've heard about some Anime changed or cut some parts of the story. In One Piece many names were changed in the German version. But Noir or example has lost its atmosphere with the German voices and that's what I don't like.
With the time you get used to any voice, I think. And if it's not so, you can still watch the original... ;)

In One Piece's case, no, the story is being tweaked as well in several areas. Besides a lot of the little things, I again point out the decision to ax the Arlong Arc (a move which angered several fans since this was a major developing arc for Nami.)

I'd say dropping an entire chunk of episodes which have been confirmed as non-filler counts as changing the story

WOW! That is pretty bad butchery! From what I heard the edits they made to the first couple of episodes were fairly small (though really stupid). So I thought I might actually watch it if they weren't going to make too many noticeable changes, but if they are going to be doing this that major I don't think I'll bother. You'd think that if they have to change the story that much in the interests of making it "kid friendly" they would decide not to market it for kids. Methinks that they saw a series with 200+ episodes and started seeing dollar signs. If it got lots of fans hooked they could have a source of income for a good long time. They probably thought that more kids would watch it since its a "cartoon".

I read an interview on the "4kids should be banned from anime" thread, actually it was on a link on that page, that even tho they sometimes release box sets, they have less episodes than the original Japanese version. Is that true? Is the only way to truly enjoy anime by buying it expensively from specialty websites or playing the Japanese region dvds on a special dvd player?
What I dont understand is how they can take something decent & turn it into something horrible. Did anyone hear the new opening theme to One Piece? Where it cuts in and out of rap? It was horrible. I have never seen Tokyo Mew Mew subbed, but somehow I hated the dubbed version. If all they do is delete some scenes, fuck upp the dialogue, and hire awful voice actors, how can the spirit of the original show be changed so drastically?
