Obligatory Kimagure Orange Road Thread

Post by Kionon » Sat Jun 04, 2005 6:49 pm

For those of you who do not know me, my favorite series is Kimagure Orange Road. We KOR fans are few and far between, and while I know of a few on the Org, I'm sure there are others. I'm especially interested in who else considers it their fave.

KOR is the story of a boy, Kyosuke, with telekenetic powers who move to a new town and meets a girl he instantly falls in love with. Her name is Madoka, and she's a juvenile delinquent, all those she seemed nice when he first met her. When her sister-like friend, Hikaru, sees Kyosuke use his powers when he think he is all alone, she falls for him. Thus, we have the Dangerous Triangle. Hijinks and comedy ensue.

So, per the sticky, I open this up with some controversial and riveting questions, I'll offer my opinions, which will be placed in a spoiler box.

Hikaru: Intentional annoyance, unfortunate distraction, or total victim?
Spoiler wrote: In all honesty, I hover somehere between Intentional Annoyance and Unfortunate Distraction. I genuinely believe Hikaru loves Kyosuke with all her heart for several reasons. For her to be only an intentional annoyance, she would have to be playing Kyosuke, which she isn't. Her intentions ARE to change Kyosuke, as she admits she knows he is in love with Madoka, and knew it from the beginning in the first movie. So, she isn't completely just an unfortunate distraction. She created some of the situation herself.

The concept of her as a total victim flies in the face of that very fact. One cannot be a victim if he or she causes pain to themselves by willingly committing actions that could end badly. Hikaru knew Kyosuke was in love with Madoka and that he would likely at some point move to end their relationship. She insisted on putting herself between Kyosuke and Madoka and risking that she could keep her relationship with Kyosuke. She really cannot claim victim status at all.
Kasuga: name of which of Kyosuke's parents? This question has not been clearly answered in the series, and there is still debate in the community.
Spoiler wrote: His mother's. The Kasuga clan refers to his grandparents as well, which are his mother's parents. Since the Kasuga clan is so powerful, as per Japanese tradition, the more powerful name takes precedence, even if the woman holds that name. I don't really get the debate, I think the circumstantial evidence for this answer is obvious.
And finally, just for kicks, is Akane really a lesbian?
Spoiler wrote: Matsumoto Izumi, the author of KOR, said "she'll probably grow out of it." Sounds to me like he's passing the buck. Akane is old enough, I feel to understand the ramifications of her infatuation with Madoka. So much so, that she makes Kyosuke pretend to be her boyfriend to prove she is either not single... or not a lesbian. If not for her previous infatuation, I would likely have believe the former. However, because of it I believe the latter. She definitely has some sexuality issues, even if she is straight (and I don't think she knows one way or the other during the series). At the end of the day, I have to pass the buck too. Whatever sexuality Akane decides on, she's going to have some work to do, I think. Could be interesting to watch.
Hope there's some interest in this thread!

Have you watched the both movies?

I'll go into spoiler mode in case you haven't.

*At the bottom in case I screwed up.

It also had great 80's style songs.

I've made one of the few KOR amvs on the org. I have a couple more on an old Otakon tape that never made it into the org database. It's too bad good anime like that fall out of favor for their old school style (compared to today....it wasn't back then obviously) and because that love triangle story has been done to death by newer anime. People tend to see those first. It still has original angles and I felt a lot more emotionally involved with them than with today's love triangle anime.

In the first movie which is almost all flashback, we see Hikaru get totally ruined by Kyosuke breaking up with her. Up until then, I thought she'd been asking for it as well. But she couldn't help the fact she fell in love with him so utterly. It happens in real life....Kyosuke was almost cruel while he was severing the ties she had to him. Also a reflection of what really happens to the people involved with those kind of things in real life. It's impossible to just be friends. And unlike typical romantic comedies, you see it all in painful detail.

Glad the last movie came along eventually and helped put everything back into perspective.

I most certainly have seen it all, multiple times. Even read the other shin KORs.

I simply cannot agree with your characterization here.
spoiler wrote:Hikaru knew what she was doing. Yes, she fell in love with him, but she was still purposefully trying to subver the tie between Kyosuke and Madoka. I firmly believe she deserved what she got. Furthermore, as evidenced by Shin KOR, Hikaru was still far too attached even five years later. That is not normal behavior. She didn't move on. This is an issue she needs to deal with.

Kyosuke was only as cruel as he had to be. Hikaru is not the type to give up. She still hasn't given up on him. If he wasn't severe, she would have had wiggle room. Leave her with an inch, and Hikaru was bound to run a mile.

Yes, the final movie was really realistic, which is why I love it so much. The second movie did not so much "put things in perspective" as much as it softened the blow.
