Gundam Wing [is it worth buying?]

Post by IamSano » Tue Jun 14, 2005 9:49 am

I was thinking about purschasing the DVD's for this show and it would be awesome if I could get someone else's opinion on what they thought of Gundam Wing before I go out and make that expensive commitment.

Have you seen GW on TV before? That should pretty much let you decide.

Generally speaking, I don't mind it. I enjoyed watching it all the way through, though I didn't think of it as anything uber-special. More serious gundam fans tend to be kinda split on this one though... admittably, this time they've tried to attract more of a female audience with the pretty boys rather than gritty Gundam-ness of yore, which inevitably brought in some and turned off others.

If you liked what you've seen of it on TV, go buy it. If you're not sure... your money might be safer with something else.
I own a bit of the series and Endless Waltz, myself.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I bought the WHOLE series. All 49 episodes, and if you're okay with having the original japanese voices and the english subtitles. Go for it. The English version tends to get people confused. The french on is also good, but they talk really fast. So go for what you prefer the most. (I personally would have preferred the english version)

So, go for what you want.

Well, thats the whole probelm. I haven't seen a single episode to base my judgement on. A friend of mine liked it which made me wonder whether I should purchase it or not. Thanks Otohiko and princess. Any other opinions?

My first video (collaborative effort with R3 Studios) was a GW vid. We used Cartoon Network footage. Yes, the logo sucked, but as one op-giver stated "who would want to buy all that?"

We concur.

I believe you should buy it. It really is worth the money. We own the first two VHS and we LOVE to watch it...

I'm just curious, but does anyone remember the first commercial for GW? And how kick ass that guy's voice was!?

It's definitely worth getting. Wing's easily one of the most action-packed Gundam shows, but that's not to say it isn't packed with plenty of romance, comedy, adn political intrigue. Before SEED came around, Wing was considered one of the most popular Gundam shows, and because it was the first to be shown in the US, all the other shows were compared to it. One of the best things about Wing is that, unlike SEED and several other Gundam shows, there's a great deal of loose ends tied up at the end of the show, and the movie deals with those question you'll have at the end of the show. Also, unlike the Newtypes of the several Gundam series, or the Coordinators of, none of the characters are "Evolutionary leaps," they're just good at what they do - VERY good - so it makes the characters seem. On one final note: The mecha designs are some of the coolest you'll ever see, especially in Endless Waltz. Enjoy!

As an aside, I've been considering buying GW for a while, now, and www.dvdpacific.com has the box set for the cheapest I've seen online.

Wing would have made a fantastic 26 episode series, but they decided to make it 49 instead...

It starts out rather brilliantly, but when they all start going to outer space it all kinda gets slow and drawn out. Pretty decent conclusion, even though they leave way to many questions unanswered when it's finished.

I'd have fully endorsed it 4-5 years ago, but there's way better things out there now. I'd only buy it if you're really into Gundam, or are looking for something with some old-school charm and complete lack of deformation to express comedy.
