I'm assuming you've probably seen Fushigi Yuugi, Magic Knight Rayearth, and El Hazard. If not, those are much like what you were describing. There's also Maze and Those Who Hunt Elves - both are quite good.

And once you've done that, move onward to Twelve Kingdoms. Escaflowne, then Twelve Kingdoms. GO!

Here is some:

Romance/Comedy: Chobits, Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi.

Adventure: Fushigi Yugi, Chrono Crusade, Berserk, Gundam Wing, Blue Gender.

Horror: Berserk, Hellsing, Serial Experiments: Lain, Blood: the last vampire, Vampire D. Hunter (original and second).

Adventure/Comedy: Yu-Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Blue Seed.

those are really good animes I know- some of them. Anyway I put them into genres so you can see and chobits is one of clamps newish work, pretty short anime/manga and is good.

x2. After having seen the OAV before the series, I was very surprised at how good the series was. So make sure you watch the 25-episode series and not the 2-episode OVA (that *might* be worth seeing if you're an ecchi-fan).

Also, you'd probably love Scrapped Princess as much as I did. It's a fantasy-drama with elements of sci-fi. It left a friend of mine (male) in tears and almost did the same to me.

I second the reccomendation for El-Hazard.

Jubei-Chan would fit the plain person thrust into a position of power, but it's pretty comedic at times (not that that's a bad thing...)

Try something new and great, and even made by Clamp. Check out their latest creation: Tsubasa Chronicle
