the starngest anime i have encountered would definitely have to be Lain and FLCL. They were both really strange, so strange to the point that i didnt even give them a chance.

Campus Special Investigator Hikaruon, hands down.

The school bully is part of an evil cult based out of extradimensional spaces, so in order to fight him, it's absolutely necessary to transform into a robot suit that's half Kamen Rider, half prog-rock album cover. For the pure hearts of the students. Yes. It makes the end of Hanappe Bazooka look rational.

Fun, yes. Sociologically interesting, also yes. Sensical, fuck no.

Probably the funniest/strangest thing about that whole thing is how out of nowhere Lain just hops into a bear suit. I wish I was that awesome.

The strangest anime I've ever watched is probably Lain.
But judging from reviews and information, Gunslinger Girl sounds twice as strange. I mean... young, brainwashed italian girls with guns. It may not involve the paranormal phenomena that Lain has, but it's still very strange. Kinda funny too.

For me it would definately have to be Pretty Face. Such a hilarious piece of work, Teenage boy, Rando is a martial arts master. One day, on his way to a martial arts competition the bus hes in gets in an accident, Rando's face is horribly burned. This mad doctor takes him into surgery and reconstructs his face to look exactly the picture of the girl, he has a crush on, in his pocket. Now, with the face of the girl hes in love with, he is forced to dress up as woman. He is soon adopted by that girls parents as her long lost twin sister.
