DBZ's popular because of one simple thing:
It's Pro Wrestling with bigger explosions.
The storyline's semi-soap-operatic, and the fight scenes are just non-stop explosions and martial arts. DBZ, while nowhere near mentally stimulating, is still good for just mindless action entertainment.

Characters fighting in the air has never been done better in any anime. I use to hate it, but then I was flippin' through the channels and ran into vegeta and goku fighting, destroying boulders the size of buildings and I never seen anything like it. Even now, what in the hell can beat DBZ in aerial fight scenes? That's what I thought, you can't think of any. And the way they fight using every part of there body in the air seems so natural, and isn't as cheep as other attempts I've seen to make characters fight in the air, like the matrix.
