Don't get me wrong the sound effects and background noise are great, particularly for an anime made in that time frame.
However, is it me or is that cricket sound all through out Vol 1? (I would not know about the other volumes as I read the manga first so no sound.)
I just wanted to make sure it was not some sort of faulty DVD encoding like a bootleg or something.
Considering the complicated casing I would not think so, but I figure you can't be to careful.
So I am guessing that cricket noise is supposed to be there that much? (A haunting lonely effect maybe?)
EVA sound effects?

They're actually cicadas, and it's really just to add some realism to the setting. I'm not sure when it happens, if it's annually or every few years, but cicadas go nutts out in Japan and plague the populace with their screeching soundwaves. As with the US, it's typically the more urban settings that get it the worst.

Josh & Becky's Evangelion Page and probably the Red Cross Booklet wrote:NOISES OF CICADA:
In the world of Evangelion, because of radical changes in the climate and environment caused by the Second Impact, Japan had lost her four seasons and had a summer climate all through the year. That is why in the anime the noises of cicada can always be heard.
