i recommend:
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo (SaiKano)
Gasaraki
and RahXephon
all are great anime, although if you are not into the Mecha thing, then maybe Gasaraki and RahXephon are not for you, although the story is really interesting and i find the execution well worth it.
SaiKano is a heavily emotional anime, and might at sometimes be too much, so better have something like DigiCharat stand by when it gets too much.

For something a little different, in the scifi genra, try A Tree of Palme. Another very good one is, The Place Promised in our Early Days, Scifi again, with a love story involved, by the same people who did Voices of a Distant Star.
For series, The Crest of Stars series is pretty good. Another I recommend is the underrated Princess Nine, it's not just a baseball anime, it's a great feel good anime about a group of girls reaching for their dream.

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
