CHOBITS wats it about

Saw the first half of Chobits and wasn't too horribly impressed. But I can't say anything about the second half (since I haven't seen it). Perhaps the show gets better.

I had a similar experience with X. I found the first half of X rather boring (with a few redeeming moments here and there). The second half was much better. But as Solaria735 pointed out they're two different stories.

The manga (Chobits) is very good. So if you do end up watching the series and aren't impressed with it, there's always the manga.

I wouldn't call it hentai.
Hentai is basically porn. There's softcore porn (fanservice) but that's not the main focus of the series.

Robot girlfriend != shoujo. Robot girlfriend == shounen. Even if there are Deep Philosophical Questions too.

Not all romance is shoujo. Ask yourself: "Is this the boy's unrealistic fantasy or the girl's?" That'll be your answer in the vast majority of romance anime. There are a ton of romance anime geared toward male viewers - Chobits, Love Hina, and Ai Yori Aoshi come to mind immediately. So yes, it goes both ways.
