Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a romantic anime where there was a lot of rejection, or where the main couple had to deal with a breakup (closest I can think of is Saikano, and I'm not even finished with that yet)...

Watch Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. Quite a lot of breaking ups / coming togethers. And it's incredibly sad to boot. Truly an awesome series.
