I'm sure its been mentioned but...

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte Cristo)

The whole show is one interwoven love story: Albert's brotherly love of the Count and of Franz; Maximillian's and Valentine's love for one another; Eugenie's and Albert's; Mercedes', Edmond's, and Fernand's love triangle; Peppo's love for Albert (poor, poor Albert... it's traumatizing); Haydee's love of the Count. Played against a tale of betrayal, lust, obssesion, and revenge, it emphasizes the power of true love in a world where the Seven Deadly Sins rule supremely.

Proud to be a Jenova's Witness - WWSD (What Would Sephiroth Do?)

Unless you count me mentioning it.
I agree, it's a sweet show, with some nice comedy moments in it. My wife makes fun of me for buying the disks, but I don't care.

I LOVED HATORI'S. it's really sad too.
They reason the anime ended the way it did is because the author of the Manga was taken ill quite badly during that period, so she couldn't continue with the Manga for a while. Without the Manga, the anime storlyine essentially dried up, and the ending got shoved into the deep end.

*nods*

I want to add to the recomendation of Voices of a Distant Star. That was a REALLY good romance anime movie. Both beautiful, sad, and it takes you by your heart.
It has a new take too. Usually the guy is the one who goes off into a war and the girl waits helplessly for him to come back. Think opposite. The girl goes off into the middle of an intergalactic war, but that's not the main focus. The story focuses on how this couple copes with being apart for many years. They text message each other by cell phone, but eventually, as time passes, she goes further and further out in space. Each time she sends him back, she lets him know how long it'll take for their messages to reach each other, and as that time gets longer, they seem to get a bit farther apart, but their love still lasts.. It's so sad.. .___.

Also, there's Fullmoon ~wo Sagashite~ and Fruits Basket.

Oh, and another one. Kannazuki no Miko. It's a Shoujo-ai, but it gets really sad. It's a REALLY sad ending, and until you fully understand it, it won't seem very happy.. > >
