Ni Jianyi mentions it to Sha Jien as well in book 8, page 47
Ni Jianyi (to Jien) wrote:Unless a certain someone was trying to atone for his past ability to save a baby brother. Particularly when said brother wished only for love, and yet recieved oppression. Plus you screwed your mother. Do calm yourself Sha Jien.
Later same book
Sha Jien to Yaone wrote:There were times when, to calm her (Jien's Mother) down, I took my dead father's place and slept with her
And Jien is her real, full son.

Things like that are fairly common in Saiyuki. (specifically the original manga)

So, we have specific information about the *shudder* mother/son thing that proves their relationship, but in the manga does it mention anywhere about Hakkai? ..... hm..

I think the thing with Hakkai was in the earlier books. It was talked about in the series, maybe not out right, but hinted at a LOT.

Found it. Book 5, chapter 25:

Hakkai: I honestly was...

Hakkai: ... hoping to wake up in hell. I've felt that way since I lost someone dear.

Gojyo: Your lover?

Hakkai: Well, yes. That's half of it.

Gojyo: What's that mean?
Hakkai: She was also my older sister.

Hakkai: *sips his tea*

Oh, Sorry for double posting, but I forgot one thing.

Chin Yisou also taunts Hakkai about his 'relationship' in book 4 somewhere, but I forget where, and I don't have time to look it up.

Necropost, but I lost track of this thread before.

Oh, that tea is precisely why one level of this series is so wonderfully demented. <3 Hakkai, you baffling, creepy bastard. <3

Anyway, there are several demented/wrong elements in this series - like everything Nii Jyeni does or says, basically - but I don't think it's glorified, which is worth noting. Nor is it really demonized. It just is, and the reader has to make up his/her own opinion on it. One of our heroes has committed a major atrocity, while the villains - Kougaiji & co., at least - are shown in a sympathetic light fairly often. Gyokumen Koshu is kind of one-dimensional so far, but the others - even Nii, creep and sociopath that he is - have some interesting sides to them.

It's not a series with nice pat answers like "good guys always do good things, bad guys always do bad things." I like that about it. So yes, there's some rather demented goings-on in the backstory; we just have to think about how it affects them in the present day.

I agree- Saiyuki is wonderful. The 'bad' side has some redeeming traits while our 'good' guys are anything but. XD I like how you can sympathize with almost everyone in the series, there's no black and white...

...that icon is disturbing. It's like a tiny video parody. 8-)

I have to say in my own defense, though, that if I say "awesome" and "Saiyuki" in the same sentence I am generally talking about the manga. The anime was like watching a grade-school play: you do it out of sentimental value, not because you actually enjoy what you're watching. Though the first half was a little better than the second.

...not that I'm not still buying it and making videos out of it, but y'know. Public service announcement of the day. Please don't judge the manga by the anime. And I'm not one of those "The manga is always better" zealots, either.

ahem. running now.

XD Hehehe, I forget where I got it from. Someone made it here... *hearts the King*

But nyar! I agree with you- the Anime is soooo deliciously corny. Like, I only watch it for the interaction of our "fab five"- screw the plot, the okay animation, and the other characters. Nothing else keeps me tied to that show other than the 'heros'.

Although, I'm worried since Geneon got Reload. ;-; I LOVE their dub voices, and if it's not those four specifically, I'm not even gonna waste my time.
