Best animation (prettiness) of action I would have to give to Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.

Overall craziness: Beserk.

Dark action (a favorite of mine) would be Texnolyze, Blood: The Last Vampire, Paranoia Agent, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust in that order.

Honerable mention: Samurai_7 for awesome fight scenes.

Last place: Hellsing. Interesting anime but not the best fight scenes.

I would definately agree with pen pen on the GITS being the best animated action. Even if the action was few and far between, when you saw the fight you nearly wet yourself because it looked so good.

But if you wanted my opinion on the best AS has premiered?

Animated: Ghost in the Shell (the animation made you drool every episode)
Action: Gundam 08th MS team (they fought in all 13 episodes and ever part was amazingly done. It wasn't blind fighting and over done special effects. It was great fight scenes mixed with great realism for the anime)
Drama: Fullmetal Alchemist (despite the many who love inuyasha, FMA had managed to pull you into the story line so much that seeing a character dies made you completely devistated. Case in point; the death of Maes Hughes.)
Comedy: FLCL (best choice for comedy and every one of the six episodes made you laugh)
Romance: Inuyasha (The relationship of Inuyasha and kagome plus Sango and Miroku was always interesting to see how it developed.)
Dark: Paranoia Agent (even if other shows have their dark sides, this whole series was one big dark side of the effects of a single lie and the paranoia behind people)

For sheer action (story aside, just going for the 'gets the blood pumping' vibe) the holy trinity for me:
-Getter Robo: Armageddon (or The Last Days on Earth, depending which translation you prefer)
-Fist of the North Star
and
-Berserk

Finally watched that recently...for the weeks following, the phrase "Totoro wants your soooooooul!" Got bounced between my friends and I for a while (...plus, we're all officially convinced that goat was sent from Hell itself, and, to this end, have decided this is one of those movies that must be REALLY insane under the influence.)

So it's good? hm...might check it out..I've been thinking of picking up Gantz as well, and the Hellsing Ultimate Collection, which I heard was way sicker than the U.S. show.
