I remember watching it when I was a little kid and being rather disturbed. So yeah, I would have to agree its not really a kids movie.

Well, Batman the Animated Series was animated mostly by TMS in Japan, so does that make Batman (1991) the Animated Series an anime? (no).
The Last Unicorn is a Rankin/Bass production, the same guys that made the animated Hobbit, Return of the King, Flight of the Dragons, and most of the stop motion holiday speciuals (Rudolph, Peter Cottontail, etc.)
The Last Unicorn is still a great movie though. I heard they were doing a live action version.

Here's the bottom line, as it stands: The Last Unicorn is considered non-anime.

Shame, seems it has the potential to be an anime.

The Last Unicorn was animated by a Japanese company named Topcraft. After Unicorn, Topcraft worked with Miyazaki for Nausicaa, and then the senior staff of Topcraft went over to Studio Ghibli when it was formed.

Wellm this hits 2 of the 3 main criteria for "anime" as defined by the org... but not the whole "produced primarily for a japanese audience" part.

Oh? What are the three criteria for anime?
Making an amv, is rather like being the director of a Broadway show, where you have a million dancers and each of them only knows one step.

For the org? The three basic criteria they (used to) use are Produced by a Japanese Company, Produced in Japan, and Produced for a primarily Japanese audiance.

They expanded the definition a bit to be very spicific for video games and origional animation (the latter of which i really can't understand because it takes the entirety of the definition and throws it out the window).
