dressing like your anime character: good or physco?
i should really stop doing this, but the weirdest thought popped into my mind....do you think that dressing like your favorite anime character is going too far? I mean just picture it.....your hanging out and all of a sudden some physcopath comes waltzing up dressed like Naruto or something........what do YOU think.................
I honestly think that if someone does this...........they need a WHOLE lot of help. I mean, i dont think anyone is THAT oppsessed with anime.....or are they???!!!!!!

I've actually decided to give a serious answer, if only for my own amusement.
Firs you have to consider what setting your favorite anime character is. In most cases, I would find it odd if people "cosplayed" as characters with distinctive costumes, period clothes, or uniforms for no apparent reason. An example might be someone walking around dressed as Kenshin, in suburbia, at the mall where there is no convention anywhere around the area.
However, I have, in the past, worn clothes that are anime character injokes. For instance, I used to own a Piyo Piyo shirt, which is a copy of Kyoko's apron from Maison Ikkoku. I also had another shirt from the same series that belonged to Godai that says only "Potato" on it. Maison Ikkoku takes place in the 1980s, which at the time was the present, and there is nothing special about any of the clothes. Only fans of Maison Ikkoku would get my shirts, so, in that case although I am literally wearing clothes of my favorite anime characters, no one would be wiser. Not even most newer anime fans.
The same goes for several of Kyosuke Kasuga's distinctive t-shirts, or the "Save The Sea" t-shirts found in Mint Na Bokura.

I agree with this. And you also have to look at the normal style of the person. Like some of the black leather creations would look ok on a person who is normally goth, but a person who doesn't normally wear that style would look like they were on their way to a convention. Same with the school uniforms. Particularly the female ones. If you're the type of person who would normally go around in pleated skirts and stuff, more power to you. Anyone else would look like they're on their way to a convention. I guess the point I'm trying to make is, if it either fits your surroundings/time period and/or you can pull it off within your normal style without too much work, more power to you. But if the person goes to great lengths just to look like their favorite anime character all the time and looks like they're on their way to a convention when its just a normal day, that's when, in my mind, it kinda goes into the realm of "psycho"Kionon wrote:I've actually decided to give a serious answer, if only for my own amusement.

*applauses the two posts previous* Amen!
I also think it helps in this decision to consider the character. Hypothetically, if they were wandering about in the streets, would they find it flattering or creepy to see someone dressed like them? I think it best to leave the cosplay in the con.

Having just been to my first anime convension ever I am inclinded to side with the "It is really friggen creepy" side of the matter. It is a little less annoying however when the costume is really well done or the wearer is not rediculusly obnoxious and walks around either expecting every one to know who they are or are snotty towards people who aren't dressed up like them. I saw so many Clouds, Ichigos and Naruto's this past weekend for a life time.

iv'e never been to a convention( ) so iv'e never really seen anyone in character, except for when i was walking in near the wall, one guy looked like he came from FF(long black robe/cloak, tall, spiky red hair), Me, i'll simply wear an anime shirt but that it, if someone i knew decides to do this regularly then they should 1. Dress appropriately and not in a way that its painful to look at 2. Be in character 3. dont half ass the look.
