Oh! I remember getting my mother into anime. I showed her what I had, and also anything that looked like something she'd like. I feel entirely lucky that she's willing to try anything once. She has more anime than I do!

AMVs are actually a pretty good gateway for getting someone interested in anime. Failing that, just try playing some stuff that suits their personality.

Azumanga Daioh, and Fumoffu are great for a quick laugh, and utterly addicting if you get caught up.

Cowboy Bebop and Macross Zero are good for story with some action in it.

Basically anything by Miyazaki. Laputa, Kiki's delivery service, Mononoke, Naussica, Porco Rosso... etc.

I'd say avoid the stuff that is overtly funky like Dokuro, Dogtato-Kun and Cat Soup.

I came up with a short list of what she might like ,and is appropriate
Slayers
Escaflowne
Orphen
Witch hunter robin (i know she likes this series )

Now its just trying to get her to spend some time and watch some which I think will be near impossible. Maybe if i show her the trailers it would help. escaflowne I think is done by bandai, orphen is adv and witch hunter robin I think is genon. Companies might have trailers on the websites

Or you could show er some non-spoiler AMVs with the animes at hand that she might like. Since you mentioned she likes AMVs.

well...i think that it depends on her attitude and what she likes...if you get to know her REALLY well...then you can take her enterests and blend that in with anime. for myself...i used to hate anime, but my older bro. showed me things like full metal alchemist, bleach, and cowboy bebop...things that i am really into ...and i am now totally obsessed...so yeah...i think that she probably should start looking into it more, who knows, most likely she looks up to you and will start looking up to what you do :) so yeah.

I have a freind that I desperately wanted to get into anime but except for love hina and ranma he never did. Whenever I try to show him gundam for example he calls it Transformers. While I'm overzealous about what I watch he can't get far past the fact that they are cartoons and we all know the prevailing rule in this country is that anything animated is just for kids. Anyway the whole point of this is if you try to force what you like on other people expect a backlash. Maybe one time casually suggest that they watch an anime with you.

Sailor Moon comes to mind as a possibility... It was written for girls just about your sister's age, I think. It's formulaic and awfully saccharine, to be sure, but so are a lot of American-made cartoons, especially the ones for girls.

One thing you might try with that series, by the way, is offering your sister both the dubbed and the subbed versions; the cut-and-censored dubs, for all their horrible voice acting, drew a lot of girls into watching it back in the day. The subbed versions, by nature of comparison to these inferior versions, also have a lot of "deleted scenes" in them, so to speak; whole deleted episodes, in fact. These might give her the same thrill that it gave me to realize that someone actually dared to do things in anime that weren't allowed in our native animations.

The thrill was sort of like finding out there were some deleted scenes from G.I. Joe in which people actually got shot and killed instead of just being winged or having their vehicles hit. It was also like finding out that someone gets killed in My Little Pony. (That actually happened, according to someone I knew; of course, it was one of those things where the death is implied rather than shown, but still, the bad guy got pushed off a cliff.) You start to think "Hey... maybe this series is better than I thought...!"

It doesn't have to be anything too dark or racy to give you that thrill, either. I was very amused that the "lemonade" or "soda" that the characters were supposedly drinking in the dubbed versions was actually an alcoholic beverage; that was funny in the same way as the Bloom County strip years ago in which Budweiser dumps its old mascot Spuds McKenzie for the Care Bears.

"The Care Bears care about drinkin' and cuttin' loose!"

"Look at me! I'm Bullwinkle!"

She may like Pretear, it is one of the cute magic girl animes. It is a nice story with some humor, some romance, and if you look for it some ties to Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. It's also really low priced, I got it for 20 bucks at Best Buy.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
