Why would someone hate something because its popular?
Because when something becomes popular marketing becomes a factor and as you stare at endless variations of the same damm thing all the time any small, tiny bit of joy that you once got from seeing it gets sucked out. Toys, keychains, playing cards, cartoons, spinoff cartoons, side characters with toys, keychains, their own spinoff cartoons, movies that suck, specials that suck. Lunchboxes, screensavers, cellphone covers, live action versions of cartoons, cosplay that sucks, video games (that suck) and subsequent video games (that suck).

Once, everywhere you look all you begin to see is a show that you might possibly have liked given a chance become so commonplace and diluted that it's barely recognizable as what it used to be. Does Naruto need an eposode on the simpsons? Did Scooby Doo need a movie as a CG dog that talked? Godzuki... WTF was that?

Hating somthing because other people like it is dumb. Thats the sort of thing that loser goth types get into, sitting at denny's or something while bitching and sharing EMO. Just because lots of people like those stupid shoes with a wheel in the heel isn't a reason to hate those stupid shoes with a wheel in the heel. No, it's ok to hate it because it's stupid. Nobody has to agree with you, you can even pretend to like them while secretly hating them. It's ok. Caring, and letting how others think influence you is a benchmark of being immature, such as a middle school student or something. Being a sociopath is the road to maturity.

i used to dislike naruto, without ever seein it or anythin, but hearin comments about bein the new dbz that what made me turn my head. i used to watch dbz... ten years ago, when i was a lil kid. and that's why i used to not watch naruto, until i watched whisper of the beast and saw the sweet effects, only to be dissappointed that they were effects from the video editor. anways, i try to catch it everynow an then, dunno why. i used to disslike eva for some reason, but after its last air on adult swim i started watchin it, (nothin else on, my excuse anways). dislike inuyasha. seems like its always an as, bein so popular, which bothers me since theres nothin else good on. it just seems too far fetch and immature to me

any other stuff i dislike is because its not my taste, popular or not.

I don't really care either way, and never did. When people won't shut up about something though and just make it out to be this amazing legendary thing and then I finally see it and it's nothing great (i.e. Evangelion) I get pretty annoyed.

Because hating something that most people like is a way of standing out and making yourself seem different from most people, which is a strong part of the mentality behind emo/goth culture.

You're both right to some extent.

"When two people agree on everything, only one of them is thinking."

There's two ways to look at something that is "popular":

#1 it's so good that many people like it

#2 it's crap made for mass consumption and the fact that so many people like it serves to show how many morons we have to live with.

But then we'd have to define the group of people among who said thing is popular to know which type it is. Certainly, a cartoon about talking airplanes that airs on Discovery Kids can be very popular among four-year-olds and unemployed child psychiatrists, but a 45-year-old mechanical engineer wouldn't be so crazy about it. The four-year-olds would probably hate hentai, unless they were still being breastfed.

Mainstream popularity means there is a larger chance of a series being a sellout, but it isn't 100% sure. Why don't people ever make the logical association? Good things attract fans. Good things get overdone because people without creativity imitate things that worked when they were original ideas. All those Naruto/Linkin Park videos about Haku that populate hosatchel had to start somewhere, right?

I may be more propense to watching an anime that my peers reccomend, and less propense to do so if my 12-year-old brother tells me to watch it, and because birds of a feather do flock together, I'll probably like the shows they reccomend and hate the shows my brother reccomends, but taste can go both ways. Me and my brother watch School Rumble and like it, yet when my friends couldn't shut up about Hellsing I ended up hating it.

If I talk too much I'll probably glide off-topic so I think I'll wrap it up rather sooner than later: When an anime airs, nobody has watched it, and if one ore one billion people do, it doesn't change what was already done. Sure, it can change the future outcome (and here I totally agree with OmniStrata) but even if Naruto has three times more seasons of fillers than it does episodes of real content, it doesn't mean that someone, somewhere won't like it for the parts that are actually good without turning into a mass-media eating idiot.

Sorry if I wrote too much.

Good point. Now that you mention that, I consider hype (I'm Tired of Hearing About It) to be different from Everybody Likes It So I Hate It, which is more like a backlash than a reaction to hype. Jadedness or irritation are different from hate.

As for keychains and posters being the devil, I collect that shit, so stuff it. ;)
