Obviously, it's not a direct duplicate.
The essential elements of the stories are the same though, small town being squeezed tries to hire some heavy hitters to break the rut. Heck, there is a movie called "the magnificent seven" with telly savala in it that IS pretty much a direct copy. Fun to watch back to back with the Kurosawa flick.

So.. yeah, the basic elements are all there, just stretched out to a full series and with some character development added in. The original didn't have (or really need) much by the way of character development so, I guess it evens out once you get past the weirdness and spaceship chopping swords.

It's just an adaptation, why would they bother to just DO the movie again? The 7 samurai keep their core personalities, the same three survive at the end as in the movie. It's the same, but new.

Either enjoy it or not, I like both.

my only real gripe was that there seems to be at times some sketchy animation scenes and some silly continuity errors.

Yes, the first half of the Shiroji episode was...really bad. And SOME parts later on, though not as noticable. The animation in the first half reminded me of Rugrats from 1991

rugrats rocked, lol.
But, i mean, it's not a BAD plot, they just should of maybe not of bothered using the same title if it's going to be THAT different. That's like making star wars pre-historic cavemen looking for a lost sibling, just not the same. I'v only seen the first 5-6 eps, so i'm withholding ultimate judgment for now. It looks ok (cept i still don't like the robots and face paint) so i won't bash it.

also to all canadians:
TUNE INTO RAZER THURSDAY NIGHT, FRIDAY AT NOON, OR SATURDAY NIGHT ON TEH CHANNLE RAZER TO SEE Samurai 7, Balisk and Trinity Blood Back to Back to Back Uncensored (i think i even saw a nipple on balisk :o). They are pretty good series and worth watching, the dubs arn't bad so ur ears won't bleed. Just thought I'd let u know

They didn't use the SAME title. The movie was called "The seven samurai" the show is "Samurai 7" it's got a new sort of updated name to show that it's going to be different but still retain a lot of the original qualities.

I've only seen the original movie. It was really good for such an old movie, so if the anime is anything similar...I suggest checking it out.
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.
