when the animation quality on a show goes to hell

Post by madbunny » Sun Sep 10, 2006 11:28 pm

Don't you hate it when the animation quality on a show goes straight to hell?
Here is my example.

This is earlier in the show... second or third episode I think.

It all looks fine. Nothing really special about it.

until...

finally it turns into this. What the hell happened here?

Outsourcing. The bane of consistent quality animation production. I wouldn't be surprised that the latter episode was done by an overseas crew and due to budget or time constraints, the producers okayed the animation despite the differences.

A classic example is Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV. On one hand you have the jaw-dropping (at the time) animation of the air and space battles, and then you have the very inconsistent character animation, depending on whether StudioNue did the scene themselves or the scene got outsourced.

Another example is Lost Universe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Universe#Yashigani Although episode 4 is probably an extreme example. Click on the "What happened to the episode 4?" and "Yashigani Special" links at the bottom of the Wiki page.

Yes it sucks when "ART!!!" in a series goes to hell.. but it's good sometimes because after they get focusing on more important episodes the animation/art gets better. I hope this happens with Naruto when it gets on track with the manga.. get the old animation staff in or something.. a nice chunk of the spoiler episodes lack effort in the art.. at some points in the series the detail in art is really nice.. it sometimes lacks but then kicks up a notch on the more important episodes the second it gets back on with the manga I hope to see the art has improved from the spoilers.

Actually, if you pay closer attention, the artistic style of Naruto is used as a tool. It changes depending on what's going on. During a few of the bigger fightscenes, if you look you'll notice that the detail and quality of the art has been greatly "dumbed down". But you'll also notice that all of the action is more fluid and has a great feel in spite of this. Overall the quality of the animation in Naruto has remained the same(if you're counting the fillers, I wouldn't know... I will never watch them).

Dattebayo recently did a piece on the filler episodes of Naruto which ended with a 'lovely' 'tribute' to some of the 'best' examples of offmodel characters I've ever seen in my life. Yeah, it got bad. It got really really bad.

That said, some of their examples were from episodes like 30, which have a different art style from most of the series, but the quality of the animation is still very high.

I'll have to check that one out. Any examples you can point to?

I seem to recall that NHK started looking pretty tweaky at times too, but thanks to the premise of the show it still worked.

I guess if you've never seen any of the show it wouldn't stand out as much. Essentialy they've screwed up the proportions. The art style is different as well, and the character looks like she's drawn by a middle school student that barely knows anatomy. If I can, I'll try to pull a couple of shots from the same angle and expression to provide a better example.
Look at the smiley face above it. It is using, more or less the traditional spacing of facial features. She looks deformed, especially when you compare to the more or less consistent style that they stick to with her character.

How anme proportions look
Unless the artist is completely exagerating something, most of the time they're drawn fairly close to the character design... right?
