You've got me curious about that sewer chapter now. Care to elaborate?

Aww, I just watched the raw of episode 1.

Here's my review of it so far, please note that I've never read the original story, and have only heard the Broadway adaptation of it.

Obviously this centers around Cosette instead of Jean Valjean.... so the first episode mainly focuses on how Cosette entered the Thenardiers' household, way after ValJean has already become mayor.

The story opens up with Fantine and Cosette traveling on a road. Cosette drops her bonnet as she runs ahead of her mother. Fantine looks too clean to be impoverish, while Cosette portrays the same feel as a cute baby kitten that needs it's mother while still maintaining a sense of selflessness. She's full of one worded phrases ("Chisai!", "Okii!", "Oishii!" [by the way, she's referring to bread in all these statements, not anything else, you pervert]) that make her even more adorably cute, and enough to make you hope no one in the world will make any loli hentai of this kitten.

Fantine enters the town asking all the shops about work, and you see the bond between these two as well as notice how simplistic Cosette's dialogue can be, which was probably done to show innocently young she is. Finding a job eventually leads the mother and daughter to Thenadier's house where Cosette immediately starts playing with Eponine and Azelma(SP?).

At the end of the scene Fantine and Cosette are parted and I was almost welling up inside. I think they probably could've placed better emphasis on the music at this specific scene. The music was one continuous soft piece that flowed from the whole scene since they arrived at Thenardier's door, which was like 5 minutes before they depart, so the atmosphere wasn't that dramatic although there is a crying Cosette standing as she watches her mother walk away. There definitely should've been a more dynamic sad melody here to stir up emotions. If they did that, I probably would've actually cried.... maybe.

Moving on... they introduced a new character that I wasn't aware of, Allen(SP?) or Alain (for the French spelling). This is a little kid that pretty much portrays exactly Valjean's actions before he was "Prisoner 24601". It felt like a good touch to the story, but the only thing that bugs me about him is his voice actor sounds WAAAAAY too old to be his voice. His role seems to be the big brother to a couple of orphans.

The episode pretty much ends with Fantine finding a job (I think), and then seeing Cosette laboring for the evil Thenardier mom with Cosette's last line being "mother".

In the preview, it looks like we pretty much will see how Jean Valjean turned into "an honest man" (quoting the musical) as well as scenes with Gavroche (although I thought he shouldn't even be born when Cosette was this age, he sounded much younger in the musical).

The music overall isn't really too enticing or memorable. The intro and ending left my head almost immediately after they were done playing.

Overall, it's a very slow series. It's definitely not a show for everyone, more so not really for male audiences. The series lacks any humor, action, and climatic points (at least in the first episode). However people who are fans of the work may find themselves curious about episode 2, either for the adorable shojo cuteness of Cosette or just to see if it gets any better with Valjean's story. :D
