Why is it that every series with a prominent younger male lead, the voice they use has an annoying trait to his voice, like a squeakiness. Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina, Ah! My Goddess, and I'm sure there are more. This is partly why I don't generally watch dubs unless its on TV.

Also, why is it when companies try to emulate a Kansai accent they use a THICK New York or Southern one (usually done unconvincingly)? Subtlety anyone? At least Funimation's Burst Angel dub's use of a Texas accent for Osaka accent was decent since the voice actors are genuine Texans.

Using accents is not a good idea in my book unless the actor is a native speaker or has spent a great deal of time listening to and speaking with that accent. Lots of Hollywood movies fail at this too.

I can handle most dubs. The Love Hina one the southern accents were just too much for some characters. I know I have a slight southern twang myself even though I was born and bred in the north but that was too much. The same thing happened with Peacemaker but that one I got used to since most of the main characters didn't have s southern accent or was just using it sometimes.

The name thing sometimes annoys me. Most of the time I'll let the names slide but when someone says "Hawk-Eye" for Hakkai there is no way in heck I can tolerate that.

As far as the Kodocha thing, it sucks that the other opening couldn't be included but the Japanese makers of the show wouldn't let Funimation have it. What can you do? I see that more as a shoot the messenger type of thing. Personally I have no problems cause I like the third one more.

Geneon on the whole releases good dubs but the Ai Yori Aoshi dub needs a TOTAL rew0rk.

In THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, does it make sense to add -sama, -chan, etc. to names?

"Kaoru-sama" in the dub made my spleen hurt...

Mr. Kaoru would have been PERFECTLY fine... Same syllables damnit, wtf is up with that!

When Ukyou in Ranma 1/2 used the term "Ranma Honey", not only did it sound perfectly cute, it made my ears grimace [as if they're capable of that] when in one ep, she said: Ran-chan

Ok, wtf!

STOP ADDING JAPANESE CONTEXT TO ENGLISH PLEASE! I'm perfectly fine when dubbers decide to ad-lib things to make sense [jokes that need to be explained due to cultural difference tend to uh, suck].

Best example of ad-lib comedy is without a doubt: Those who Hunt Elves...

I loved Luci Chrisstian as Himeno in Pretear, but what was with Hayate's voice actor? He switched from a normal american accent to british/australian and then back again all throughout the series. Did anyone else notice that?

While I don't have a favorite dubbing company, I will say this much...

Of late, I've come to like a lot of Funimation's more recent dubs. However, recently, I got to watching their dubs for the Lupin III movies.

Overall...mixed bag.
Sonny Strait makes a decent Lupin, some moments he kind of slips more into Hughes (for lack of a better way to put it.) but overall, he gives a good effort.
Similarly, Chris Sabat does a pretty solid job with Jigen.
Meredith McCoy makes for a good Fujiko overall, especially when she needs to play up the tougher aspect, however the smooth parts are kind of touch and go
Mike McFarland, all respect to the guy, just doesn't really work well as Goemon. I can kind of hear what he's going for, but it sounds more like he's got something stuck in his throat than anything else.
and Phillip Wilburn...if he can just get a bit more of a gravelly tone would be a great Zenigata (as he is now he has the personality for it, but his voice doesn't quite have the gruff tone for the role.)

For the record, this comparison isn't just against their Japanese counterparts, but the other dub companies as well. Funimation put together a decent cast and they do have potential, so I'll give some of the other movies a watch to see if there's improvement, but at the moment, it's still a neutral vote.

To this end, I second Cornwiggle's concern on name pronunciations coming up here.
In this case the two biggies being pronouncing Lupin's name 'Loo-pin' as opposed to 'Loo-pahn' and Goemon being 'Go-uh-mon' instead of 'Go-e-mon'
The former I can kind of understand...the latter not as much.
