I think it's often a device to increase tension- when that DBZ muscled man puts his hands like *so* and starts to say "Kaaaaaaa", you *know* what's going to happen. You know before the hapless enemy does- you're in on the secret. It increases the enjoyment of the moment when that muscled insect/robot/pink thing gets his head blown off. This is used in Slayers for the major attacks (along with *that* music. I still find myself humming the somethings-about-to-be-blown-up music from Slayers whenever things are about to get blown up).

In other things, like Kenshin and stuff, it gives the nerds something to catalogue and put in a big database of what-the-move-that-he-does-once-in-a-single-episode-does. These kind of things exist for the 250-odd attacks in Slayers.

In yet others, it's obviously parody. Since Sailor Moon and friends did it, it's a cliche- so the comedy series do it. See Slayers for an example.

I guess by that logic the fight at the end of KOHD sucked because they never yelled out the name of an attack like you think they should, they jsut threw punches and kicks non stop.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

I cant remember the fight scene being that bad.....

Anyway, I thought shouting names and such is just a way of focusing their energy when doing attacks.

I say it's cheap filler to make things easier for the animation department.
