Just as a precursory note: I'm yet to see the animé, so I can't refer to both it and the manga as some already have.

I'm not sure how it pans out in the animé, but in the manga Naru is the girl of the promise. Kanako is the girl of a promise, but just about running the inn with Keitaro.

And again, maybe she's more of a bitch in the animé, but from my opinion of the manga, Naru's the better match. Granted, it really didn't look that way from the start, but the progression worked for me.

The series of Love hina is quite odd. It kinda stays with the manga version (manga version being way better!!!). The oavs strengthen Keitaros and Narus relationship but still no promised girl in sight. Personally Im starting to think that the "promised" girl got a sex change and is now known as the "promised" man.

***********HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED ALL OF LOVE HINA*************

BTW THIS IS BASED ON THE TV SHOW. I DONT WANT TO GET INTO THE MANGA.

Promise Girl #1 - This girl is the very first that mentioned Tokyo U. As far as I know she has yet to make an appearance except for a Love Hina game which I have yet to play. BTW in future references to this girl I will say Nazo - chan (little enigma) so that I dont have to say "promised" every time.

Naru - Not the promised girl, She was playing with Keitaro and Mutsumi when the Nazo chan mentioned the legend of Todai. She was very close to Keitaro and Mutsumi but always felt left behind since she was so much younger.

Mutsumi - Also not the promised girl. She also over heard the legend of Todai and took it to heart. Her relationship to keitaro is the easiest since her feelings are quite open.

Kanoko - Keitaro's adobted sister, in a way a promised girl altough her promise is based on the annex which Keitaro promised to go with her to. Kanoko feels very strongly for Keitaro since he was the first person to truely care for her. BTW in the manga their relationship is different.

Well I hope that might clear things up a little about these girls and their connections with Keitaro and the past. Or maybe it will make it more complicated, I say get all the rest of the series (Specials + OAVS) and try to atleast read the manga, it will suprise you how much they screwed with the original story.

Ok number one the promised girl was Naru from the start. That's made clear in the love hina manga. Mutsumi remembers and is trying to get Keitaro and Naru togehter by any means. Mutsumi rules and if you think she is bad wait till you meet her mom! She is a milf!!!

Love hina rules the dub is ghastly but better than nothing.
