(nods) I like Macross quite a bit too :(

I know I'll get flamed for saying I dislike Robotech, but you guys who loved it during the 80's (although I did too and then saw macross and realized the butchery) should really check it out.

But I still don't get why everyone trashes CN for censoring their animes. You people should just be glad that they play it at all. They are doing the anime business a great service by playing censored anime on TV.
Heres what Robotech producer Carl Macek has to say about this:

Sorry 'bout that. Just had to rant for a min.
Id much rather not see a show at all if its edited. Ive seen what they do when they edit, DWchang is right on the fact that it changes the storyline especially in a series like Kenshin where death and pain are key ingredients to the storyline. Anyways Im not really affected by CN, they arent showing anything I haven't seen years before and probably already own anyways. My only wish is that they would show more of a variety on toonami. Not just mind numbing, almost pointless action.

I'm stuck w/ the CN version, too. :x It is a great anime from what I have seen, but it is really obvious they have done a buttload of editing and I haven't even seen the uncut version!
I can't agree with you on Kaoru, though. At times I hate her, at others I feel for her, then again sometimes she kicks butt. I guess that is what makes a multi-dimensional character, huh? I still like her better than Megumi...

i seriously hope kauru sounds better in these dvds. My god watching that ep after kenshin left almost made me cry. No not because it was sad, but that was the crapiest drama scene i have ever scene, not to mention half the episode was a cat fight :?

Sorry to be rude, but obviously you don't know these things.

Samurai X is an OVA series that explains about Kenshin's past, before the actual TV show, which is called Rorouni Kenshin (Sorry if I spelt that wrong).

Just because anime have what looks like the same characters as a different one doesn't mean it's the same.

That's like saying RAYEARTH and Magic Knight Rayearth are the same things. Or some of the many different Tenchi series are the same thing...

Or saying that X/1999, XTV, and Tokyo Babylon are all the same thing. =\

Anyway, my view on the original topic is this:

I'm glad that TV is now showing a lot of anime, regardless if it's edited or not. It's impossible to get an unedited version of some anime, because of today's viewing restrictions. It's like trying to show an X rated movie on a children's network.
CN is pushing it as it is with Adult Swim. Don't keep demanding unedited stuff and boycotting the edited, because that will just get you nowhere. =\

The Anime Network is now available, so go demand that from hereif you are so strong in your feelings. :?

Be glad that the editing today isn't as heavy as it was in the 80's, where they changed the whole dialogue instead of translating it just to fit the mouth movements, combined 3 anime that had nothing to do with each other to make one americanized anime, or changed names and called pandas racoons.

You people should really be thankful for what we have now. I mean, really, just take your own advice and buy the DVDs. Most of them are uncut. In fact, they just released the full first season of Sailor moon, uncut and uncensored.

There's really nothing worth complaining about in Kenshin compaired to other anime, such as what they did with The Vision of Escaflowne and Sailor Moon.

Yup! That's why I suggested to them to put it on Adult Swim. It's quite a simple solution to all this. I mean even the people watching it on Toonami know things have changed and that some of it is REALLY lame (as D-Reaper has mentioned).

I mean this wouldn't change anything for most of the people replying to this too since I'm sure they can stay up till 10 p.m. and watch it. I mean they did a fairly good job with Bebop and Trigun in edits. I might also add that Trigun is quite a bit less violent and 'adult' than Kenshin. Although I know CN thought "ooh this has guns it must be worse" in their ignorance (i.e. not watching the show through). Hell, I even mailed them and told them to watch the entire show and rethink this instead of going "ooh samurais and ninjas, kids like samurais!" Obviously they don't realize this show isn't for children (or at least US children....Japanese children watched this and this violence didn't effect them like supposed US Psychologists say...bah another argument for another time).

She sounds a lot better in the original japanese language. Then again, you're talking someone that is very biased on this dub/sub debate. Either way, IMO she sounds a lot better.

First of all, it took me awhile to decipher what you said since the grammar (or maybe spelling is off). I suggest using the preview button.

Anyway, if I understand your reply correclty, you are very incorrect on this as SQ has pointed out.

One major piece of evidence is the fact that the "Samurai X" DVD cover is flippable and that the other cover says "Rurouni Kenshin."

The main reason it is named Samurai X instead of "Rurouni Kenshin OVA" is because the Kenshin TV series distribution rights are owned by Media Blasters while the OVAs are owned by ADV. ADV didn't want to have the same title as Media Blasters and thus opted for this lame title (since Samurais are COOL!!! :().

As SQ has stated, "Samurai X" takes place before the Kenshin TV series where Kenshin is the "Hitorkiri Battousai" (an assassin). It shows the Bakumatsu (the revolution) and just what he did during it (i.e kill a ton of people) and also shows the reasons for his atonement and how he got "the scars."

Not that related, but in case you (and others in this thread) have not seen it and are watching the TV series for the first time right now...DO NOT watch the OVA yet. Although it takes place BEFORE the TV series, within the context of the Manga (the original. what the TV show is based off of), it takes place after the "Kyoto Arc" and is a flashback which ties into the final Arc (Revenge).

It may be chronologically before, but again, when watching (or reading the manga), it is AFTER. For those watching, if you haven't seen the OVA, you're probably wondering where he got the scars, what is he attoning for (i.e. protecting without killing) and so on right? Well by not knowing this until after episode 62, I have found that, it is quite a bit more enjoyable when you finally do find out.

I hate to use a sexual example, but it's like foreplay before having sex. It'll make watching the OVA and finding all this out QUITE A BIT more enjoyable since you will wonder the entire time through the TV series and when you finally find out, it's that much more rewarding.

Although I agree with the initial point about editing in the 80's, I just wanted to state that they do change dialogue and translations to fit mouth movements. Actually they do do this for just about every normal dub. This is a major reason I dislike dubs since they could potentially change something important just to fit mouth movements. But I won't go further since I don't wanna bring up the argument...I just wanted to state that they do this thing that was apalling in the 80's.

As I have stated, I AM glad that they are showing anime on TV and that it is being widely accepted. HOWEVER, as I stated, I'm only angry because if they're going to show it, they might as well show it within it's original context and not change so many things that they change the show entirely.

I shit you not with Kenshin, look at the edits they did to the Episode about Eiji and his family (found here). They completely changed it so that the viewer wouldn't know that his entire family was murdered since they edited out EVERY scene with his family being hung and this would in turn lead to Eiji having no real reasons for revenge and being angry. They've just taken out a major component of that episode and well..I won't spoil things, but this is NOTHING compared to what lies ahead. I will however concede that the character may be minor, but these little stories and things are what makes Kenshin good. Oh and the things I am talking about later are BIG things to BIG characters...even Kenshin and his past. Now, can you honestly say you're happy with seeing a show changed THAT much and so many people watching it and ignorantly accepting it as this lame?
SQ wrote:There's really nothing worth complaining about in Kenshin compaired to other anime, such as what they did with The Vision of Escaflowne and Sailor Moon.
I don't know man...given, Fox's Escaflowne is the worst job I've ever seen (and sucked the most since it was my favorite show) since they took out an entire episode (the first one, go figure) and edited out 5 minutes out of each episode (since Japanese episodes are 23 minutes, but with US commercials, they had to knock it down to 18 - 19 minutes) regardless of content. HOWEVER, Kenshin is up there for me in terms of how much of the story they have changed and general feel.

So yeah, I think there are things worth complaining about.

I realize what you're saying here, but I was adressing something else. In the 80's, Gigantor was not translated AT ALL. And the guy who bought the show just made up a whole new script to fit the mouth movements. Therefore you have a different story.

As for the Kenshin editing. Hrm, okay, so the smashed one episode to pieces. I didn't realize that. You never fail to prove me wrong in somehting, chang. =\

However, they also took out a lot of screens of Hitomi's mom in the first few episodes, and then never put them on the suppsedly uncut DVD. =\
Atleast Kenshin DVDs are truly "uncut"

AHHHH!! Wow that's a hell of a lot worse than Robotech (which I thought you were referring to).

Sadly, that's not the only episode that was smashed to bits. Head over here and look for Kenshin and look at every episode and what was edited out. In particular, Episdoe 29/30 (Saitoh Fight) and so on. You'll notice that they have made SIGNIFICANT changes in the story. Hell, look at all of them and you'll realize how much they changed (the biggest 'early' edit that irked me was having Aoshi's group NOT die...this is pivotal to the story and his character development).

Uhm...what do you mean uncut for Escaflowne. I know Kenshin's DVDs are uncut, but I believe Bandai's Escaflowne DVDs were truly uncut. If you are referring to the Fox version that was released only on tape or the 3-disc DVD set..yeah those are hacked to pieces. Hell the 3-disc dvd set takes an 8-disc/26 episode show and trims it down to 3 discs and like 6 hours (~8 episodes).

Again, if you mean the Bandai released DVDs (8 disc set, all 26 episodes), they are NOTHING like the Fox network cuts and are 'official.' If you do mean these, I'd like details since I didn't know there were cuts in them and I hate to sound arrogant, but I know this show REALLY well :).
