turn on = nosebleed? I'm confused

The nosebleed is non-directly indicating the character has been sexually aroused, err, as in an erection. Increased blood flow equals nosebleed, I guess.
In Chinese medicine, nosebleeds are caused by a chi imbalance. Basically if your nose starts bleeding, you've got too much fire chi. People with bad tempers tend to get them. Eat yellow rice to calm the fire down.

It's not that they're so turned on, it's that they're so embarassed and conflicted, the stress blows a vessel.
It's the same phenomenon as how they punish themselves for thinking ecchi thoughts about a real girl, or if they see panty, etc. They'll hit themselves or berate themselves in some way.
There's quite a history of throwing up as well, DNA2, even Southpark.
But at the same time, they all have stacks of porno under their beds.
It's a normal human response to strong, mutually contradictory social values, the male equivalent of girls who have to yell at sluts.

There's also that one scene in FLCL. I think it was episode 4...when Amarao and company had nosebleeds as they were watching Naota get ready to hit the giant baseball.motemote wrote:Alright, I'd like to know if any of you have actually had a nosebleed from seeing hotties like they do it in anime... Naruto, Green Green, Goldenboy, Love Hina, ermm, no need to continue. What is with this phenomenon. I've studied quite a bit of Japanese history and their culture, but I have not yet figured out this nosebleed thing yet.

Not quite; the nose in the Japanese frame of reference has long been a stand-in for the penis. Male immigrants to the US in the early 1900s writing home for omiai arranged marriages used to try to make their noses look longer in the pictures they sent back in order to be more appealing.narcted wrote:The nosebleed is non-directly indicating the character has been sexually aroused, err, as in an erection. In some older anime and manga, noses actually extended as a symptom of arousal, though this has been lately left by the wayside. As for the connotations of blood being forcibly ejected from the nose, well, you get the idea.

It was when Haruko finally pulled Naota's guitar out of his head, and it didn't affect Amarao -- it was only Kitsurubami and the techs.Cyanna wrote:There's also that one scene in FLCL. i first saw teh nose bleed in FLCL ... episode 4 and i was thinking "WTF!!?! "
but eya ... weird thing ... like the sweat drop an dnose bubble ... dosn't really happen in real life, just another crazy expression they use.
As for me getting nose bleeds ... i think the last one was in grade 10 or 11 ... no it was grade 11 ...
My friend (who used to be a bitching baseball pitcher) decided to throw a kiwi at me ... He decided to throw it like a fast ball. It hit me right in the left eye after i relised the kiwi was moving much faster then i could have moved my hand ... ANyways the fruit hit my eye so hard somehting in my sinus ruptured and i was bleeding all over the place while i was blind for about 5 minuites ... it took me about an hour to be albe to force open my left eye.
that was the last nose bleed i remember getting ... 2 years ago.
