Overrated, eh..

I'd have to say just about any anime feature film.. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, even Metropolis.. Not so much Akira as the others, but it still fits my criteria of 'overrated'.

I won't bother naming any series since everyone else seems to have them pegged, so, for underrated..

s.CRY.ed : Probably won't be underrated for long, but it's has a nice storyline that's on the darker things with great characters and animation backing it up.

Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu : Don't care what anyone says.. this is beyond Excel Saga in many ways, namely characters |: no impaling, please

Goldenboy : Perverted Fun õ_Õ

One Piece : I've said characters too much in this post anyway, so I'll substitute it with.. uh .. muffins.. Another series with very memorable muffins.. it's my new db |: Not sure this qualifies as underrated, but I haven't heard much in the ways of fandom about it.

Then there's Nadesico and Vandread.. Light fare, yes, but still entertaining :/

oh, and how could I forget.. GIGANTOR!! best theme ever

Actually, from what I've seen Nadesico's quite popular (the catch being that a lot of it's fanbase is based around...err...more adult things...let's just leave it at the comment it's probably not smart to go image hunting under just 'Nadesico'...for the love of God people, she's 12!!!)

Another for the underrated bin: 'Aura Battler Dunbine' (I KNOW I'm in a minority on this vote...one of the more original mecha shows I can recall having seen, and yet, from what I can tell it's got a US fanbase of maybe...10-20 people if the web is any indicator (It was succesful in Japan at the time, however I'm not sure of it's standing over there at this point)...kind of a shame, but, ah well...)

Overrated Ghost in the Shell (it's good just not as good as it's made out to be)

Underrated Samurai Deeper Kyo (A good show that i rarely see mentioned)

Hrmh.. :? Nadesico never seemed to have that big of a fanbase to me. Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but it's always just struck me as a good but overlooked show.. oh, well.

Memories is pretty damn underrated, too, now that I think about it.. lest I be missing something there, too.

I'll toss this one into the overrated pile while I'm at it.. |:

Noir.. I just couldn't get into it, but maybe that was just my problem.

The Crest of the Stars (Seikai no Monshou) and Banner of the Stars (Seikai no Senki) series are vastly underrated. I don't think they've ever even been mentioned in this forum. I suppose it's not popular because it lacks bloody violence, giant mechas, and fanservice, but I believe that it is a very well-done show. It's especially good if you're looking for something a bit more realistic than your average anime. My only complaints are the lack of a real ending (though room is left for a fourth 13-episode segment, and there's a lot more story in the novels too. Anyway, the ending was satisfactory, just not emotional enough to be a "true" ending.) and there were a couple rather uneventful areas of the storyline.

Underated I'd agree would be Kanon..

It's just hard to find.. (I lost my fansubs and since no one seems to want to release it I can't get it back)

Eva would be Overated, as would dBz, (depends on if your listening to the people that go on about it being the next Jesus, or the people that safe the Creaters have sexual relations with the devil)
I mean it's not that bad, but its not that good either.
Eva was fun, but I wouldn't dwell on it..

Fruits Basket definatly doesn't get enough attention either.. Damn thats funny..

Excel Saga I didn't think was worth the attention..
Everyone seems to be distrubiting One Peice at the Moment, I haven't really touched that.. it looked pretty stupid when I saw one of the eps..
Could be that I underrate it.. or people are just getting desprete..

Overrated Recent ones..
Possible Spirited Away. They say its suppose to be all the great. Even went to the cinemas.. But.. it was boring...

and one thing..

FMP DIDN"T MAKE IT TO THE TOP 30????
WHo the hell Made that list..?

I just finished watching the second season recently. It's few animes I have to pause cause i was laughing to much to be able to keep going.
(loved that rugby ep the best)

AMEN. :o

Completely agreed. I purposely left out anime films because they are disadvantaged when compared to series, they have 90 minutes to do what a series can do in over 10 hours. I have seen about 25 anime series and about 25 anime films. I liked about 22 out of 25 series, whereas I like 3 out of 25 films. I really liked ninja scroll, and I really liked Princess Mononoke, and I also liked VHD: Bloodlust, but I really dont feel that they qualify to be compared with cowboy bebop or NGE, because they are so much shorter. That and the fact that so many anime films are utter crap that it would be a waste of time going over every overrated one.
SSJVegita0609 wrote:I think you guys don't really understand what it means to be UNDERATED.

Rouroni Kenshin (the series) has a HUGE fanbase, I mean MASSIVE. The OAVs were made simply BECAUSE the fanbase was THAT DAMN BIG. In order for something to be UNDERATED, it must be deemed sucky by many many people. RK is NOT underated. Neither is Berserk, Love Hina, Escaflowne, Dbz, or YYH. All animes that ALSO have huge fanbases.

As for overated, definately EVA.
I think there is a misunderstanding about what "under-rated" means. Take an anime and judge it for yourself, then compare that judgement to the average judgement of your peers. If the anime is liked less than you liked it, it is underrated. If it is liked more than you like it, it is overrated. No fancy math or fanbase measurements. Its really that simple. An overrated/underrated statement is purely opinion based.

For example, my favorite anime is Ranma 1/2. Ranma 1/2 is beloved by very many and is many peoples favorite anime (its not just as simple as a large viewing base). It ranks 9th on the top 30 anime. Because it is high in both my peers opinion and my own, I do not consider it underrated.
The same goes for Inuyasha, my 2nd favorite anime. However, FMP, my 3rd favorite anime, is not even on the top 30, and is not given as much credit as I give it. Most people are probably saying "FMP?" right now because no one has told them that its an awesome anime. Of course these are all based off of my opinion, so its only underrated to me, its not universal.

As far as Evangelion goes, its the first major anime series I ever heard of, and I remeber seeing the box and reading the self proclaiming statement. I have seen the show, and I think its one of the few shows that could actually get away with that statement. If someone came in here and said it was the greatest anime ever, it would be hard for me to argue, for the right type of person, EVA can't be beat. Oh and NGE is a close 2nd to Cowboy Bebop on the top 30 anime, so it would seem A lot of people agree. Lets not forget that Evangelion is the very definition of a Love it or Hate it anime. A lot of people really hate it and even more really like it. I thought Eva was a masterpeice in its own, very unique, way; and I'm sure that those who hated it did so for personal reasons (they didnt like the characters, dark plot, some other aspect, etc) or because of a misconception or misunderstanding about the meaning and purpose of NGE.
