I agree with Dj, fansubbers don't work hard enough, most of the time. True your not paying for Fan subs, but thats no excuse for poor quality, or for changing entire lines into childish racial slurs and sexist opinunes. With anything you decide to produce and put effort into in life, do it right, period. If your just puting a piece of crap out on the net so you can see your name on some anime credits, then tape your name to the Tv and watch it on top of anything you want.

Fan subs were the best way for me to get into anime. If it haden't been for that, I never would have been able to afford it (Still burns a royal hole in my 40 hour week pay check).

So any fansubbers out there should think about this. Don't give anime a bad name by doing crap fansubs, we will hate you... forever.

Actually, all the fansubs of recent anime I've seen seems to be fairly decent. Yes, inconsistencies suck, but the sheer quality seems to have improved over some other stuff. Example: I borrowed a friend's fansubs of DBZ (it amuses me... *shrug*). The fansubbers are from Hong Kong or something, I think, so uhm yeah... half the time it's barely understandable unless you focus, but it's still better than the dubs in some respects and... well, who can afford to buy almost 300 eps worth of DVDs anyway?

I can only imagine how hard it is to do a fansubbing. Honestly, since the person doing it isn't getting money, they can do a half-ass job if they want to. You can probably find the same anime somewhere else done by a person who actually cares.

The only hard part that requires skill is the actual translation. Subtitle timeing is more like monkey work. Anyone can do it, it's just a pain in the ass.

You guys have to remember, this is a free service that some people are doing. For some groups, the image is more important than the translations, and thus they get all sorts of pretty text and nice karaoke lyrics to the songs. The fact that the fansubbing scene is being much more reminiscient of a 0 day warez community causes many groups to substitute quality in lieu of speed. And seeing the download numbers for the various releases of a particular episode will show why each group strives to be the first rather than the best. I seem to remember that the number of downloads are about 10x greater than when a group releases first. And most people aren't going to care much of what you perceive as wrong with fansubbed works. The main solution isn't better fansubbers, you need better fans who will demand higher quality works, and then the fansubbers will be happy to comply.

Actually, what we need are fans with the patience to demand and then wait for domestic releases.

That'd be a nice quirk too. Less of the "I'd buy anime that I enjoy, but I'm poor arguments" could be a nice start. Still, having high quality fansubbers around does keep the domestic companies on their toes, and it forces them to spend the extra effort to at least try to put out a quality release(though this doesn't necessarily happen all the time).
