It's a decision you make over what to spend your money on. As Ryuu pointed out there are alternatives to the over-priced dvd issue. However, anime is not the same as a Hollywood movie, it has a MUCH smaller fan base in that sense so bringing things over here tend to cost quite a bit once you go through all the translations and dubbing etc...Add to the fact that illegal copies do float around, you have EVEN LESS people buying things, causing prices to inflate. It's a lose lose situation in such cases...

But meh, it doesn't stop me from paying ridiculous amounts of money on the animes I want. I have a job, I buy. When I didn't have a job, I saved and bought what I really wanted.

For example, the other day, I spent $50 on a DVD with a running time of 90 minutes, BECAUSE I WANTED IT! It's that simple. However, you must also compare companies and how they release, I mean the $50 X dvd I bought featured 3 episodes while the $50 Fruits Basket DVD I bought featured 6.

Quit your whining already
wow, I just go to best buy and get .hack for $20.00 and they hav 5 episods on them *thinks*

US dvds for long anime are horrid on the bank account - total agreement. But buying the original unsubtitled import dvds from Japan costs even more per episode.

My biggest complaint - there are anime I want that are *only* available via downloaded fansub - or you can buy a poor copy of the fansub saved to dvd or vhs (poor as in the exact same quality of the fuzzy fansub you would download). As unethical as it may be, there are some titles i would pay US price to buy bootlegged copies of *just* because I can't find import versions to buy. I simply cannot download fansubs. I refuse to purchase fansubs (when they are given for free download to others - and there is no difference in quality).

For instance, I would be more than happy to spend $100 for 90 minutes of footage - Kasho no Tsuki - whether it's a poorly subtitled bootleg version or an unsubtitled import version or just a highly inflated US version - I'd even go up to $150 for this anime - this 2 episode ova anime that lasts no more than 90 minutes. But I can't. The only version of this anime I can find is the fansub - crappy divx encode that would be good to watch but not to own. And worse still - I can't even download and watch it - I'd have to pay $15-30 plus shipping to get a copy of the fuzzy little divx file.

My point? If you want anime badly enough, money doesn't make a bit of difference. I don't mind working a few extra weeks to pay a few hundred dollars for an anime I really want to own. I would *love* to see this anime imported and sold here no matter how much they inflate the price. Because unless they do (or the hongkong people decide to snag it), I'll never have any other opportunity to own it.

How much would you pay for an anime you want? Depends on how much you want it.

Yup, and this helped me to find the best price.

If more and more people just watched fansubs or bought bootlegs than anime prices would be even higher, or companies would just stop importing them altogether. (Except for 4Kids of course, they need stuff that they can put on Saturday morning cartoon blocks.)

Well, I for one pretty much can't dl from the internet b/c I have crappy dial-up. Right now I can say that it's wrong to dl from the 'net, but that doesn't necessarily mean I wouldn't do it if I had the opportunity...it's too much to ask someone to pay very high pricecs for something like this if it's available for free. Sure, if I were insanely rich, I would be happy to buy all the anime, but I can't buy nay right now b/c I just don't have any money. It really is a lose-lose situation because there isn't enough demand here in America, and that's a shame, but there's no use in creying about it. Life can't always be perfect. Just cope and move on. That's the only thing I can say.
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

Just remember that downloads and illegal copies are what drive up the prices. :(

Vlad86 wrote:$80 for 24 eps. sounds reasonable to me. I paid that much to get all 26 eps. of Outlaw Star.

People who complain like this should look at the prices for official anime dvds in Japan and be thankful they don't have to pay that much.

Cripes, people are getting so cheap these days.
"well this guy charges too much so I'm gonna steal his music/show for free!" Stuff like that pisses me off. If you can't afford it, don't get it.
Now, what I don't mind is sampling (Newtype is got a good idea with the dvd), wherein you can download the first ep or a single song (or a bunch of clips like Amazon does) to see if you like, a kind of try before you buy.

The only time I could see downloading entire series or albums off the be good is if the said item is out of print and quite difficult to get. If you can buy a legitimate copy new from a store, then you shouldn't be downloading it.

I think $80 for a 26 episode series is the most they should charge, That's seems like a totally reasonable price to me--about $3 per episode. I wouldn't really even mind paying more than that most of the time... if I was recieving a quality product. But the fact of the matter is, I am usually very displeased with about every anime DVD I purchase. The shitty work that I've seen on some stuff that I've bought, *cough*Utena*cough* just makes me wanna puke. I still end up buying them anyways though T_T
