Motoko is hardly a lesbian (in the manga anyways). She falls for Keitaro harder than anyone else in Love Hina. The anime didn't explain all too well why she really hated turtles but the manga does a better job of it.

She had a crush on Keitaro? We're talking about the one with the sword, right? That seriously went over my head cuz it seemed like she was kicking his ass worse than Naru. Now that's what I call tough love. The anime made it look like she hated men too just because her older sister married one. That amuses me now that I think about it.

Is is just me, or do turtles represent penis's in anime? To name a few of the famous ones, lets try love hina. Motoko is afraid of the turtle. Now Motoko is obviously a lesbian (I mean, come on. Its about as subtle as a punch in the face). Nextly theres Master Roshii from the Dragonball series. You know, AKA the turtle hermit? I had some others, but I forgot them. Just figured I'd see what you guys thought on this.

If this is true, then I'd hate to think what is the underlying meaning of Gamera is.

As for Motoko, I think it's just a phobia of turtles. The things show up in places you were not expecting to find a living thing, like lying under your clothes. She's just suprised and shocked. Her fear of them, I think, just builds from the repetitve experience. They are also reptiles and most creatures in the reptile family have a reputation being irrationally feared and misunderstood. "Snakes. I hate snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?"

I remember watching Love Hina back when it came out fansubbed. I believe one of the Translator notes said the japanese word for turtle also meant penis... I might be wrong though it's been a couple of years since I saw the fansubs.

I think I saw that fansub too, but I think whiat it indicated was that turtle was slang for penis. In other words, when Motoko tells Keitaro "Get the turtle out!" meaning she wants someone to get Tama out of her kimono, what she's saying could be considered embarrassing in more ways than one. Or as Monty Python put it, "Don't whip it out in public, or they'll put you in the dock..."

I'm guessing this bit of slang is similar to something mentioned in the ancient Babylonian story of Gilgamesh when the king, reminding a fertility goddess of all her crimes against her various lovers, mentions of one of them that "You hit him, you turned him into a frog" shortly before adding "No more his stick goes up, no more his bucket goes down!" I think a frog, in ancient Babylonian slang, was someone whose love life had been... tragically cut short, if you get my drift.
