Just watched the first episode - loved it. I just thought, "Finally, something different..."

I have been checking out several other animes as well, such as Yumeria, K.M.M.U.S., De Capo, and Happy World - they were all basically the same time. Average teenage boy finds magical girl OR many attractive yet incredibly ditzy girls...that sort of thing :P

Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing the rest of the Samurai Champloo series.

Samurai Champaloo?

So far, it seems to be about a couple of ronin with wildly differing martial arts styles who meet up and join a girl in search of a samurai who smells of sunflowers, i think.
There some rivalry in there and more characters seem to be joining the roster, the whole thing is v. stylish with cracking fight scenes. >_<

That and/or if it will be on American TV anytime soon (doubtable). Or maybe it already is and i just dont know it yet. It would be nice to know this stuff, but whatever.

But for now i'd have to say that Kenshin is better story-wise and action-wise and depth-wise and character-wise and pretty much anything else on account that i have not seen Samurai Champloo. Looks cool though. I'm so lonely.
I don't know about it airing on TV but if it isn't licensed here yet it should be soon. There was a piece on it in this month's Newtype and most series that show up in Newtype eventually reach the US. ::sits tight and waits patiently::

Samurai Champloo has been licensed by Geneon for a while. I believe the first DVD will be released around January 2005.

Kenshin: the ova's are better than the TV series.

Kenshin ova -vs- Champloo

I'd go with Kenshin, the show focuses on human drama and tries to prortray people as, well; people. The ovas have a nice deliberate pacing and tell the story in the amount of time nicely without too much focus on side plots.
To my mind Champloo has overdone the caracatures a bit much. To balance it out, I'd have to say that the editing style that they used is interesting and keeps you wondering what odd trick they are going to be using next to keep you interested; sort of like it was written for short attention span viewers.

Fighting style: toss up. Kenshin appeals to me a bit more since I studied Kendo for some time, whereas Champloo can be fun to watch since I've never seen breakdancing moves used in swordplay before.

Art: Kenshin. No question Kenshin is high quality, all the lines are clean and smooth. none of the characters morph and stretch all over the place. Champloo plays a bit loose with the art direction, it's ok just not my bag.

Kenshin ova > Champloo

First off, i wanted to say i love how you worded your post to inspire healthy conversation instead of meaningless debate.

As for the 2 shows, I havn't seen any of samurai champaloo but it woudl take a lot to better RK as a whole. Art and action are all nice and make for a good entertainment. But that won't make a good show. Kenshin had such a strong moral and story behind it that it didnt feel like it was a show about samurais and sword fighting, rather a fight between two opposing people and their beliefs, coupled with a few other major themes.

I'm not saying Champaloo has this or dosent, i cant vouch either way. However, I do know that Kenshin was an incredibly good story and i disagree big time with the OVA's being better then the TV series. The first 2, Trust & Betrayl were a decent story depicting his life before hes seen in the first episode of the TV series. Still though, i didn't get the same feeling as i did with the series. They just felt like short stories about a samurai. Not to mention the aweful "ending" known as Reflection. Why they felt the need to change the ending of the manga along with the ENTIRE theme of the series, I will never know.

But hey, they make good AMV footage :D

When i first saw the Kenshin OVAs at a convention I thought it was about as close as I was ever gonna get to seeing Blade of the immortal animated.
When I read about the manga and and saw some of the TV show I was sorely dissappointed to find out it was just another commercial series in the guy/group of people learn more and more ridiculous techniques so that they can beat up more and more ridiculous bad guys vein.
Which is fine, but endless slapstick tends to ruin any serious feelings i might have for the characters. I understand it lightens the mood, making it more suitable for a wider audience which is fine for TV.
What I don't understand is why it has such a titanic following.

Mind you, plenty of other commercial series like Slayers, Dragonball & Trigun have huge followings. I just prefer originality to formula.
