the fist anime i ever saw was Totoro when I was like 3(i think) i too didnt know what it was. and then there was the whole pokemon thing*sweatdrop* which i didnt know was anime either...eh..lets move on..
but the first anime that got me hooked was tenchi. back in the good ol' toonami days, my friend thought i would like the show so i gave it a shot and fell in love with it and still to this day im in love with it and watch it when i get a chance! of course it was the edited version, so u know, it was the EDITED version! hah! well u can imagine my surprise when i bought the complete oav collection @ sam goody and watched it! thats probably why its my fave anime too because it holds such a deep memory, lol

My son brought home Ninja Scroll when he was in college, he warned me that there were some scenes I might not aprove of. I thought, well, how bad could it be, it's a cartoon, isn't it? Later..... ok, this isn't kids cartoons! Second one he brought home was Vampire Hunter D. I thought, this stuff is really pretty good. Then he brought home a copy of Evangelion, now I was hooked. Anime has themes and ideas that they just don't have in live movies. I have always been a scifi fan, this really puts that into movies.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Speed Racer, quite probably, although I have also seen a number of old kid-oriented anime the titles of which elude me.
Anyway, that was back in the late 80's. Then Macross somewhere around 1990... (I was 6 back then). I thought it was mighty cool.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I saw Sailor Moon before I knew about whole range and diversity of anime. But the real one was thanks to my friend who one day during the local Bookstores Pokemon Leage day (where kids would come by and play the card game while I would hang with my friends and the "gym Leader") brought in The Utena Movie to watch on the TV there. That was the day I found out that there was more to anime then what was on TV. That was about 4-5 years ago (good times)

I saw Dragonball when I was eight years old and loved it. I didn't even know it was anime - I only knew that I would record it every morning (it came on at 5:30 Am on my local PBS). All they ever did was replay the first season, but damn I loved it.
I then saw a little bit of Ronin Warriors and enjoyed that too.
It wasn't until I started watching Evangelion that I became full-fledged.
